Slackware using lots of ram

Slackware right now doing next to nothing is taking up almost 4gbs of RAM...How is it possible just last night i was using 2 before I went to bed and normally running all that I run I am using at max 1 but yesterday I went multilib and ever since I have had this decrease in performance I believe. Whats up with this? this can't be good that slackware is using that much memory for doing now but running a file I always been running and never had this issue till yesterday

Have a look at this site and then post the output of the "free -m" command.

speck 11-11-2012 12:34 PM

According to your "free" output your system is using 651 MB RAM and has 3292 MB RAM free.

According to the output of free I have the switched around version free is much lower I have done free -m i have 219 megabytes FREE and 3724 USED so how is that possible? is is something to do with buffers and cache or did you just read the output wrong?

and all that is with nothing running right now other then what runs on the system anyway.. I never had that much used RAM ever on a linux machine

Read the website I linked in my first reply, that will explain the numbers I posted. You should be paying attention to the line containing "-/+ buffers/cache:" instead of the "mem:" line.

right sorry I forgot to click that link got distracted but alright I see but I still feel odd about this change because i never used to be caching this much memory and i do have programs loading slower and this one program that even times it self when it starts i've seen it take 2 seconds longer to load and that 2 seconds longer could mean everything not because of start up time but because of this issue of sometimes it can mean the server is gonna run slower but i'm hoping that thats not the case -.-

but i understand now and I guess we will see how this goes if the server runs fine after it's started up then i will continue to to keep my system the way it is

So i reinstalled slackware anyway to get rid of the 32bit libraries and this time slackware is disk caching right off before I swear it wasn't i had lots of free ram so I guess you were right and thank you for sharing that with me thats pretty cool :) I'll install the 32bit libraries when I NEED them i till then will use another alternative way to get things done as that shouldn't be too hard I've learned to manager with what ssh has to offer me and am more often then not even sshed into my linux machine as i can't stand to sit in my broken chair all day :P so just only thing is when I need to use a web browser but i guess if i can learn to use something like wget i can on my windows machine look up the url to stuff and download them that way no issues so i guess thats my next task :) Glad I have some long time past experience with wget but not sure if it's proper for the job. RESEARCH TIME! :) Thanks everyone
