Slackware Upgrade Question

Hey, I'm running Slackware 9.0, and was wondering that if I upgrade to Slackware 10.0 will I lose all my files, programs, mysql databases etc?

keefaz 07-27-2004 08:36 AM

For my part I upgraded to 10 only with swaret ;) I did not loose my sql databases. The configurations files are let as this (do not forget to work with the .new files to upgrade them).

Also this sort of upgrade does not touch your datas in your home directory.

No, you shouldn't. The upgrade doesn't overwrite any user data. There's a README file on disc 1 that tells you how to upgrade. I think you just copy over the .tgz files and run upgradepkg.

Of course that's not to say you shouldn't back up though!

Okay, I don't have the disks, I was going to download the files from a mirror.

jkobrien 07-27-2004 08:46 AM

Yeah, that's fine too - you should be also able to download the README from the same mirror. It never hurts to look at those.

DONT USE SWARET... on the cd there's a file name UPGARDE.TXT that should be of use, it shows you how to upgrade to the newest version step by step...it should be easy enough

I agree with equilibrium - I've made that mistake and had to do a reinstall as a consequence. In fairness, most of it was down to me not rtfm'ing, but ftp'ing all the tgz files and running upgradepkg isn't complicated. UPGRADE.TXT is certainly the file I was referring to as README. Again you don't have to have the CD to read it, it will be on any of the slackware mirror sites.
