Slackware runs XboX!

Not many people know that you can run Slackware on the Xbox. The majority are using Xebian (Debian).

Just like in the PC world, Slackware (again), is far superior to Debian for the Xbox.

Info:

Version 1.0 Xbox
Mechassault hack

Hardware Mods:

40GB Maxtor 7200 ATA100 HDD
ATA 100 IDE cable mod
SMC USB NIC
Vantec Stealth 80mm case fan
Adesso 4-Port USB hub
BTC USB Keyboard

Software:

Cromwell 2.29 Linux BIOS
Seraphim Linux 0.65 (Slackware 9.0!)
2.4.25 kernel (CVS patch)
ProFTPD 1.2.10-rc1 (CVS)
Samba 3.0.1
gShield Firewall 1.28
PortSentry 1.2 HIDS
ez-ipupdate 3.0.11b8

The pic doesn't actually prove that this very XBox is running Slackware

And I think people that want to get Linux running on the XBox know that it doesn't depend on the distribution whether you get it running or not.

Anyway... you got a link to a how-to or something to share with us how it's done?

Links! Links! Google for "Xbox Linux" and you will be dumbfounded to discover a plethora of links. But it is links you want, so it is links you indeed shall have:

Xbox Linux Project--aka "The Mothership"
It is here that you may find all that you seek.

Xbox-Linux CVS on Sourceforge
THE place for Xbox CVS. If you plan on any kernel compiling, expect to park your browser here for a spell.

Xbox Linux cluster
Here is a fine example of Xbox-Linux...oh, but wait....the picture doesn't show the pretty cluster of Xboxen connected to a TV monitor...and therefore, must be a hoax!

Xbox Linux according to the Llamma
If you ever fsck something up while performing surgery on your Xbox like I did, then the Llamma has the cure for all that ails!

Here is a snippet from the README file on the
Seraphim FTP
Quote:
Hello,
The files posted in this directory and/or its subdirectories are Seraphim
Linux which is based on Slackware(tm) Linux 9.0 and designed to run on
the Microsoft(tm) XBOX(tm).
And lastly, let us not forget the invaluable mailing lists:
Xbox Linux Developers
Xbox Linux Users

This is a questions thats been on my mind for awhile... It's easier to ask then to search for it seeing as how I'm not ready to take on this project quite yet ($).... Can you still install Linux on a brand new Xbox? Shouldn't they have "patched" it by now or completely re-worked the hardware/software to stop this sort of thing? I would buy an Xbox just to do this if it is still possible.... Even tho I probably wouldn't use it.....

You can find out what version Xbox you have by going here.

The latest Xboxes (the ones you now find on the store shelves) have the patched Xbox dashboard software which prevents you from running any "software hacks" like the Mechassault and 007 game exploits. You can still, however, modify your Xbox by route of a mod-chip, which can be obtained by the information on this marvelous site.

If you wouldn't use it, then it's certainly not worth the time nor money.

i think MS has patched it, tho I've heard this through the grapevine, so this info should be taken with a grain of salt. Although as long as the XBox has been modded it is quite possible even today to do it.

did I understand correctly? If I buy and install the mod-chip, I am able to install any normal Linux distro? If it is so, I'm going to work my ass off (not literally) to get the 200 for xbox and chip...
