slackware on USB problem .... "create_multipartboot.sh" script
 

Hi,

I loved the idea of having slackv13 on a USB stick. In fact, I'll probably go for an 8GB to holds the slackare tree and a bunch of slackbuilds with their source files as well.

However rather than retrieving the tree on ftp, wel, I just go the DVD which I already had and "mount -o loop"-ted it, more else considering it should be the same, though of course, strictly read-only access.

Now I'm using the goodly Alien Bob's "create_multipartboot.sh"
script, I set about creating an image, but ran into some problems. An image of some sort was deposited in /tmp/slackboot, so I tried it despite the errors. No go. Unbootable USB.

However, the USB key I'm using is not especially good. It was one of the cheaper ones. So it could easily be a problem with it rather than the image.

The answer to that is to try another USB. Right. But, it could also be that I tried to use the script on a mount -o loop DVD image.

I'm reading through the script to find out.

Try downloading Slax - it is a Slackware backed live linux OEM supported to "do" off USB Flash drives

Debug the hardware issues with it (it's a "mere" 192MB download).

Once HW clear, maybe You find Slax "already invented hot water" that "scratches Your itch too"?

I'm reconsidering going to Slax off my Flash backed 13.0 install right now ;)

Sure, slax is amazing .. I already did a custom copy and it actually worked.

In this case, I was trying to fill up a 8G USB with the full-on slackware.

I might dig out that slax image though. I suppose I suffer from the prejudice that it will be heavily reduced. You know, no man pages and that. Like beernuts, I hate man, but I also have to have it.

Actually I have written two short articles about how to create a USB-based Slackware installer without using that particular script. The instructions in those articles may be easier to follow and execute than using my "create_multipartboot.sh" script (although the script adds a nice additional installation menu to the installer).

Ok, I'll follow the "usbimg2disk.sh" script and article instead. Initially I skipped it, because it seemed to concern on the basic and much reduced image, and cos I have tons of HD space, I decided to go for the whole image. However, I think I did it before in the past and found the slackware installer to be really flexible and useful. Yes, it's coming back to me now.

I'm so scattered I may even find a USB stick at home on which I already put slackware a while back.
