slackware on usb

hi there,

is there a way that i could transfer my slackware in a usb so that i could get my os "on the go"? more like having my computer to boot in a usb then continue my work.

i saw slax thats why i'm wondering if i could do the same on my slackware.

thanks..

In fact you can...

Now, do you want a Slackware install to usb as it would to hdd?
or you want to make a Slax-like derivative?
or do you wanna use a pre-made Slax derivative based off 13.1/current?

Sounds like he wants this option. But then to further complicate things.. Are you going to be using this usb as your only OS or will you also be working on your PC, then want to keep your usb drive updated with any new work?

You could just install Slackware directly to the USB memory stick, treating it like a hard drive (because it is a USB hard drive, as far as the interface treats it). I've done that (with more than one distro, on different USB memory sticks and even SDHC memory cards). It is a unique system that way. You can put less software on it, as desired (since it is a smaller drive), to have more space for files.

When doing the install on a regular computer, either be very very careful not to format the base drive in that computer, or unplug it while the power is off to be safe. Then boot the install media and plug in the USB memory stick. It should tell you the drive name before you run setup. If not, do "cat /proc/partitions" and figure it out.

I use this little script (mostly borrowed :-) ). You'll need to drop the ".txt" from the name.

Yes you surely can!
and it's pretty easy too...

Now, I have been attempting to make a remaster kit for slackware and arch that will make your setup similar to
nFluxOS
see here
http://multidistro.com/NFLUXNEW/SQ4/kkits/kkits.html

or you could use Fathom's Slax Remix, which is slackware 13.1/current with KDE
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action...parentID=62815

If you want to "roll-your-own" using my kit; post back and I will help out...

what are those kits for?

wow.. thanks.. just a small problem.. i've been using linux for less than a year.. about 7months in slackware i think.. i've learned a lot actually but i think that isnt enough.. anyway ill try solving my problem first then move on and making my own distro.. could i ask you questions from time-to-time is that ok??

linus72 07-29-2010 05:43 AM

the kits contain the raw ingredients to remaster your existing Slackware
install into a bootable livecd/dvd/usb that has persistent saves.

basically, you just install the pkg.txz and then run the build script
in /root/linux-live folder

./build

and it will ask for name of livecd and where kernel is..usually vmlinuz is a symlink to vmlinuz-*version

thats enough...I can't even do bash dude...and I know 0 programming languages...

to see it in action you could use my nFluxOS slack edition off usb
and it can be remastered too once you install to hdd, etc
http://multidistro.com/

of course you can ask anything you wish?

as I said, I will "walk" you thru the remastering process...

wow.. thats great! thanks dude.. ok i'll get a copy of http://multidistro.com/NFLUXNEW/SQ4/kkits/kkits.html
then see how it goes..

what's remastering? sorry im not familiar with the terms..

linus72 07-29-2010 06:28 AM

remastering just means your gonna install some distro, set it up as you like, with desktop of your choice, settings, wallpapers, etc
and then you transform it into a livecd/dvd/usb

what are you computer specs?
type, ram, etc?

Thats exactly what its for, to make your installed system into persistent livecd/usb!

how "big" is your install?
KDE, etc??
