I do not like the new slackware logo. It is better to let me design a slackware logo in Chinese :)

Of course startx will also work. But give me at least any good reason not to start KDE automatically. Typing startx or "init 4" every time when you log in is waste of time. Maybe it is "cool", but it is pointless. Quick modifications to inittab allows you to use 6 "normal" terminals even on runlevel 4, so starting X manually makes no sense (why should I do it myself every time, when I can make computer do it for me automatically?). What's the point in using exclusively console? I can work without X (vim, links, centericq, mc(which is my favorite tool even in X)) but is this really necessary? I think it isn't. Also there is a nice screen program which allows to keep ton of compilations/script running at same time.

This debate again, eh? The fact is, changing from runlevel 3 to runlevel 4 is exceedingly easy, so this debate should not exist. You can choose whatever you want. I personally prefer runlevel 3, even though I know how to add more console ttys to runlevel 4. Why? I don't know. I just prefer it. If there are ever any problems with X, it's easy to solve. If I ever want to check something quickly without having to load X, I can (though I realize this can be done in runlevel 4 as well if you use Ctrl+Alt+F#). I almost exclusively use X (though with a terminal emulator always open), but I still prefer runlevel 3 -- perhaps because of its simplicity.

Like runlevel 3? Great. Like runlevel 4? Change one number from 3 to 4 in /etc/inittab. Was that too much work?

I just use a second entry in my grub menu.lst (or lilo.conf) file with 'init 4' in the options. That keeps my iniitab untouched and gives me the option at boot time of booting whichever way I want to, without having to edit or enter boot options manually.

XavierP... why didn't you close this thread? ... since you closed 2 of poll attempts. :\

I will let it go if you give me an answer... and yes I emailed him the same question. I received no response after 3 days.

T3slider 09-13-2008 11:33 PM

Is it REALLY that important? It's a stupid topic and a stupid poll. Free speech perhaps, but it's still idiocy. It's a logo. Nothing more. It doesn't change the distro in the slightest. Don't like it? Well, since it not in the actual distro ANYWHERE, and lives solely on the web page for now, you could just ignore it. If you're really upset, you could block the image as an ad in your favourite browser. This topic (which is stupid IMO) has a VERY long thread and 3 polls (one of which is still open) devoted to it. I would be trying NOT to take credit for it, but whatever. If you insist on bothering the mods, then I would expect a short-lived account here.

I get the feeling you just want to be able to take credit for the poll. In that case I think you need to learn a few things about the world around you. Some people try and help out without demanding credit.

Cotobear 09-14-2008 01:36 AM

Well, what's wrong with a poll anyways? The other thread didn't have a poll and the one that did was closed. It'd be nice to have at least one open to see what people think of it.

Anyway, you seem a bit out of line T3. What's wrong with discussing the new logo? If Nike changed their checkmark to say, an X, you think their wouldn't be discussion about it? Seems like you're complaining about a discussion that's only natural. No one has mentioned that the logo defines the distro anyways... and just because people say they dislike it doesn't mean they're going to stop visiting the website, or use the distro.. it's simply a discussion about whether or not one likes the new design, so halt the hostility.

Peace brother.

T3slider 09-14-2008 09:42 AM

Although I still think it's a stupid topic, I never said that this thread or the other one should be closed. I was responding to this:

which has been asked a few times. Call me crazy, but constantly bothering a mod with the same question who has better stuff to do is not a smart idea.

From the other thread:

This thread was already in existence, the second and third threads were identical to this one apart from the poll. That is why the threads were closed, not because there is anti-poll sentiment.

Anyway, I hope that that is now sufficient information for those who see conspiracies where there are none. Can we now get this thread back on subject and return to discussing the [logo] please.

OT?

I believe the answer is a combination of human nature and mob mentality. I put up the poll it was locked. So I got pissed that it was locked and put up a second one (probably shouldn't have)... then XavierP I believe was too bitter at that point with me for challenging his mod authority to add the poll to this thread... honestly he has NEVER answered the very question you posted... imho b/c there is no sensible answer. I can admit I was wrong for posting the second thread and getting upset... is anyone else man enough to do the right thing is the question.

XavierP expressed his sentiments on why the other two poll threads were closed. Someone created a new one. He probably just kept it open because you kept whining about it, and that is where the issue stands. Now everyone wins. Except you, because you want to take credit for the thread but now someone else is. Boo-hoo.

I am quite sure this post will be censored, but that's OK.

Currently about 50% think it is ugly. About 30% think it is great, and another 20% are neutral on the subject.

Personally I think it's fantastic.

XavierP 09-14-2008 10:12 AM

Actually, I saw this poll thread in the forum and realised that there are a significant number of members who, for whatever reason, can't function without a poll. So I left it alone. There you go, again, no silent conspiracy, no anything else. For those of you who chucked your toys out of the pram when I closed the other duplicate thread (the poll didn't really make it different) here you go - go nuts, poll away.

To be honest though, this whole thing has gone from a "what do you think" type of thread, to a "we demand the clock get turned back" type of thread. That really needs to get dialled down.

The thing to remember is this: Slackware is run by one person and that person has the final say. Even with the extremely valuable contributions from Eric and Robbie (both to Slackware and to this forum), PV owns/runs/whatevers Slackware. You can run a thousand of these threads and you can blog about it all you like, but he has decided that he likes the logo and that it fits with the ethos. Unless he changes his mind, it stays.

I will note this: Slackware is extremely configurable as are all Linux distros, so if you don't like the logo in your OS, track down all the files where it resides and change it back to the old one or to one of your choosing.

Anyway, this is longer than I had intended. To those of you who demanded that a poll was your birthright, here it is. To those of you who realised that there was more value in an actual discussion of the logo rather than just ticking a radio box and also realised that the threads were not closed from spite - thank you and carry on :)

FWIW, I don't like the logo at all. However, I have lost no sleep over it as I am aware that I can remove it from any Slackware install if I need to.

A productive answer!
But I fail to find any slackware logo on my system..Is there any installed by default somewhere ? It seems that Slackware is one (if not the only one) of the Linux distributions where there is not the distribution logo on install, desktop background image, gui stuff etc

[edit]
I found 2!! :) But very tiny though
/usr/share/apps/kpackage/pics/slack.png
/usr/share/apps/knetworkconf/pixmaps/slackware.png
Both are installed by the kdeadmin package

I also believe that the LILO boot screen has the new logo (but I may be wrong). And this goes to show, Slackware is extremely non-invasive. If there are only 2 small logos, it's probably the least branded distro out there - everything is pretty much stock/vanilla.

The most prevalent positioning for the logo is, right now, on the website. In future I would assume that it will go onto the packaging of CDs/DVDs and to the Slackbook, but unless you spend every day on the website you won't see it.

Slackware's lilo screen shows the old logo (this holds true for slackware-current as well). You may have in mind the LILO bitmap I created and which you can use instead of the default one (with the old logo): http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slacknew.bmp

Those other two tiny Slackware bitmaps mentioned here, are part of KDE (i.e. not put there by Slackware), so really the LILO bitmap is the only intentional piece of Slackware branding.

Where's the pool? You said there'd be a pool. I don't see no pool.
