Slackware new logo

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I think the new upside logo stinks. Why change something that has looked good for years. It is confusing, not clear and a gimmick.

You can do better Patrick!

I just saw this thread and thought, "what new logo?". Having just seen the new logo though, I don't like it either! I'm slightly annoyed that they have a better range of t-shirts (at the CafePress store) with the new logo than they do at the official store with the old logo .

It is different, but, it doesn't stink, imho. I think it has an "edgy, cool" feel to it.

It doesn't exactly stink, but it doesn't say "simplicity" to me the way the old logo did. Meh, just like any Slacker, I'll use the logo that looks best!

Precisely, I'm using the one that looks best, which is not the new one.

Absolutely. We're Slackers, so we use what we want on our favourite distro:-)

I didn't like the new logo on first sight, and then "got it" and it has grown on me steadily.

Actually, looks like it is growing...

I also prefer the old logo. It is simple and elegant, very much in the Slackware's way. Why change it?

I don't like the new logo at all. The problem with this kind of graphic design is that the people creating stuff like this don't seem to take into account how it will effect the seeing impaired. The old logo was elegant, simple, and easy to read. The new logo is virtually impossible to read. I seriously hope that this doesn't become the default for the next Slackware version.

It's there and it stays there - why do you all think it will suddenly go away if you complain loud enough?

Remember, it is a logo - it does have the letters 'Slackware' but since it is a logo, you're not required to read it - you're supposed to recognize it as being about Slackware. And the new logo definitely succeeds there.

The last time I saw anything like that was on a ring my old friend Gollum had. Some hairy-footed little creep pinched it off him.

Not being judgmental about this, before anyone gets upset. But you're going to get a lot of complaints about this -just because it is different-, people just don't like change much at all. That said, I think it's pretty nifty

My wife got it the first time she saw it.

Its the word "Slack", then Slack upside down.

What a hoot.

Well, it certainly won't go away if we say nothing!

Why do you think people shouldn't be allowed to express their opinion? If Pat chooses not to act on that feedback then that is his prerogative as with all things Slackware.

If I was Pat, I'd be happy that people care enough to tell me they hate it before I went and got a whole heap of T-Shirts made that no one will buy. A little bit of negative feedback should always be preferred to a whole lot of apathy.

What you've basically said above is "STFU NOOBS! We don't care if you ALL hate it and we're not changing it back no matter what!". That just smacks of arrogance. (What would have happened to Coca Cola if they'd taken the same attitude to the outcry about 'New Coke'?)

At the end of the day its just a logo and its not worth starting a holy war about it. I don't like it, but I accept that others might. I'm more concerned that you, as one of the 'recognised voices of the Slackware team' on this forum, would respond to the people who have cared enough to express their opinions with such a degree of open contempt. A "Thankyou for the feedback. We appreciate people have different tastes, but we like the new logo and don't intend to change it back" would have been a thousand times better way of responding to this. It really costs nothing to be polite and respectful.

I usually agree with you Eric, but not this time. If there are more than a few letters in a logo, it is obvious that the creator of that logo meant for people to read it (I thought Pat even talked about reading it differently, guess I must of had trouble with that too). Anyways, I find this logo very poorly done and voiced my opinion. My perception of this logo since your comments (it's there and it stays there, *basically deal with it*) tells me that Slackware has absolutely no interest anymore in catering to the seeing impaired and that is unfortunate.

By the way, since when did constructive criticism automatically get dismissed as complaining?

Frank
