Maybe people should look past the logo and instead focus on the enthusiasm that contributed to the desire shake things up.

Remember, it is a logo - it does have the letters 'Slackware' but since it is a logo, you're not required to read it - you're supposed to recognize it as being about Slackware. And the new logo definitely succeeds there.

No, definitely not.
try to send that thing via fax. you will get an horrible blur.
this logo sucks. that's it.

take the Sun logo, you have a NICE logo and THEN the 3 characters SUN.
take the Microsoft logo, beautiful Helvetica and so on...

anyway, I use only slackware from years and I'm a big fan, but that thing is the worst logo I've ever seen.

p.s.
whoever told that it's "Slack" in both sides, unfortunately it's not.
it's slackware and more erawkcals or something.

what a nightmare.

Its a logo people, its about association not words. Example... does this spell McDonalds http://prvitamins.files.wordpress.co.../mcdonalds.jpg

Romanus81 08-17-2008 12:16 AM

Still not sure what I think about it.
At first, I was like, what?
And then I looked at some of the tee shirts, after awhile it does start to grow on you.
My only suggestion would be to keep both style shirts in the shop.
My full opinion? I actually didn't care much for the old logo, I like the idea of the new one, but I think it IS rather poorly done, look at the l in slack and the r in ware. Where the little bend thing meets the line, it just looks a little sloppy. The S and the E, I dunno, probably could have been done better. I do read it however as Slackwars, while it's a awesome word, it probably isn't the best idea for a linux distro. The [ck] and the w look pretty good.
Pat should ask the guy who made it to revise it a bit.

Read it backwards and upside-down. It works.

why would xavierp or whatever.. close the poll i started in a different thread... this one is opinion.. but most don't want to write anything but they would select a box for a poll... restore my post!!! or are you scared of the results?? ... hmm... exactly.

Prostetnic_Jeltz 08-17-2008 02:01 AM

The new logo is horrible. The old one was just fine the way it was.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

$ readelf Slackware

That one made me actually LOL.

It was almost as good as the line in Bored of the Rings (sic) that said "It takes a heap of vittles to gag a Boggie."

As users of Slackware (and subscribers) we know that PV is the man and that complaining about something may or may not result in a change. We are of course entitled to our opinion, as are you.

I visited the site PV where obtained the "ambigram" which is what the designers call a logo capable of being read either way round. They specialise in this kind of work, which is undoubtedly clever. But clever is not necessarily clear.

I'm the IT Manager for several Ad Agencies, marketing and PR companies. While I will not claim to be any sort of design expert -10 years of being in that environment have rubbed off. It's been my experience that "clever" designs like the ambigram, simply fail to work. Most people never look at a logo twice, and if they have to think about it's meaning they wont. Naturally over-time, familiarisation takes place if not understanding.

As I said in the OP, IMHO the new design is not an improvement, unclear and difficult to read. The worst I can say is that it looks amateurish.

From the price list on the designer's site, one ambigram costs $25. I'll happily refund Pat that sum if he swaps back to the previous version.

I like the new logo very much. Yes, it's not as readable as before, but it has some coolness, geekiness or something about it that makes it great. And after all, logo is there not for reading, but to visually define a brand. And also I don't see the new logo fighting the old "S" (which I also like), because it doesn't replace it, so I believe both are now valid...

And yes, maybe people will have a few problems in the beginning, but the new logo will establish itself and all will be fine. Every start of a new bit of graphical design has its difficulties.

Maybe the logo could be more refined, but I don't think that the lack of refinment is apparent or a problem.

General Failure 08-17-2008 02:55 AM

I think it is quite good looking at it technically, it works well as an ambigram.

As a logo, it is by far not readable enough. You can't get it easily or on first glance. You have to think about it. That's not what you'd want as a logo.

Try to explain "slackware" to someone whose language you don't speak. If it were about McDonalds, you could just draw the logo (The Golden Arches ;)) and everyone would get it immmediately. Now try that with the new slackware logo. It's almost impossible to draw and even more difficult to read.

And that's only the technical aspect, not talking about it's optical (dis)grace... ;)

etienne 08-17-2008 03:40 AM

Even the logo is hard to read, I think that the idea of an ambrigram is close to the idea of slackware.

From the Senile Felines Designs site :
Quote:

Ambigrams are words drawn so they can be read from more than one perspective. Sometimes a word can be made to look like another when viewed in a different way?
Slackware : a different way to look at Linux !

KleB 08-17-2008 04:39 AM

The fact that everyone recognizes McDonalds logo is not consequence of its readability (it doesn't even spell the whole word!), but because everyone is familiar with it.
And of course, at the beginning, no one was familiar with it. But with time, advertising and so on, it has come to where it is now.
The same goes with the new Slackware logo. No one is familiar with it now, but with time people will get to know it.

I have used Slackware since 1996 and if they don't fix the logo I will use windows.

Not really but anyways. I like it. Don't change the web page though, it is still the cleanest, prettiest, easiest to use and most functional webpage I have ever seen. If they change the webpage I will use windows. Not really but anyways. Regardless of what font they use in the logo or how they change up the webpage it doesn't change Slackware. If you know where the mirrors are you never have to visit the webpage anyways, so there now the logo can't bother me. But if they move the mirrors I am screwed, unless I write a curl script to get them or just use wget, oh safe again. Now if they release another 8.1, I will use windows. Not really but anyways. Does the new logo work in windows? I like the windows advertisements on the Linux sites, especially the ones on freshmeat. They make me think. Point > Click here > But that is all it will ever do. Unless you get the new upgrade with the new Point > Click here > But that is all it will ever do. Until the next new Point > Click here > But that is all it will ever do comes out.

I use to support Windows PCs using dos 6.22 and WFW 3.11 and 95 came out and they said we would never need a command line again. But now even windows is getting scripting, even batch is making a come back. Do a search on it with Google, no shit even windozers are scripting and with VB some of them can even program. I just left a job where there was this one guy that could script/program with VB on the windows team. All the MCSEs were very proud to tell me about all the new scripting and programming stuff in Windows, but everytime they needed something like that done they had to go to the 1 guy that could do that kind of stuff. Give it sometime and even Windows will look like that. Maybe I went to far. My LQ account got reset because I hadn't visited back in so long. I guess that is a good thing. I came back to ask some questions about Linux cell phones. If they can't get Slackware on my cell phone I will use still use it on my pcs.

I like the new logo.
