"I don't use slackware because of the logo" isn't the same thing as "Because of the logo I don't use slackware". I think you got the wrong end of the stick there Brian. :)

And yes, English is a stupidly imprecise language at times.

Anyway, I'm meant to be lurking... ;)

Ah, yes. Mustn't have been fully awake. Brain-function at 33% instead of its usual 50%. :o :)

It's too bad that this thread was not started as a poll.

Road_map 08-26-2008 08:05 AM

The moderators don't want polls about this subject. It's good that this thread was not started as a poll: it's still alive.

is also a member of LQ, and has read some threads.

As for this rambling thread, though I've not read it all, there seems to
be a large majority of Slackers who dislike the new logo.

As has been pointed out by a couple of members of the Slackware
core team, Slackware is a monocracy (government by a single person),
as opposed to say Debian, which is a democracy (rule of the majority).
So Pat has earned the right to say, "The buck stops here!" And in my
opinion, that's a major reason Slack remains stable and strong.

For my particular OS needs, the monocracy is far better than democracy.
Debian proved that to me, when in the Fall of 2003 with it as my OS, I
was interested in trying other de/wm than the default Window Maker. At
the time I was running the testing version, and the developers in this
democracy could not agree on libs for KDE. Therefore, KDE was available
only in the Woody branch. Right, who wants a Woody? The software at the
time was a couple of years old. For me to even try KDE, it was necessary
to take my entire OS back to the Woody branch, and I wasn't interested
in doing that. This very problem ran me straight to Slackware, and it's
wonderful monocracy.

As for the logo, am I also entitled to an opinion?

When I was first notified about it, and looked at it, my initial reaction
was, "What in the world is Pat thinking? Is he having some mid-life crisis?"

After the version with the GIMP error has been replaced, and I've looked at
the logo quite a number of times (standing on my feet and sitting on my butt),
my opinion is the same.

IMHO the Slackware logo looks very unprofessional, and like some childish fad.

This week I sent a business proposal to a major computer hardware vendor, in
which I detailed our work here with open source software. In the proposal, he
was provided a link to the Slackware website. As I checked my email, and then
clicked on the Slackware link, I cringed. For a minute I started to remove the
link, so that he didn't see the logo, and instead just provide a whole lot of
information about Slackware. But, I didn't. Whether Pat changes it, or has
a logo that I like or not, I'm sticking with Slackware and supporting him!
Use Slackware for two months, and it will justify itself.

I grew up in the graphic design and printing business, and know that our first
impression of most businesses comes from their logo. That is the purpose of a
logo (which is usually more than or not just text), to give the customer a nice
visual image of your business. It does not look simple, professional, and more
importantly, reflective of the Slackware philosophy to me.

I *should not* post in this thread anymore because the above quote sums up everything I would want to say... but much better.

Perhaps you know something I don't know, but why not?

There are polls about things that are much more useless, such
as which distro is the best, which this or that is the best ...

Then LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards is useless.

Bruce Hill 08-26-2008 08:50 AM

We will quote you on that ^^^ :D

Road_map 08-26-2008 09:15 AM

Would you quote your logic, not my words, please? And please don't waste your time to tell me the truth about the LQ's moderators. I have a personal experience with LQ's moderators.

If you have a problem with a LQ Moderator it is always best to direct the complaint directly to that person via PM or e-mail. Complaining about Moderators here is not appropriate in my opinion.

XavierP 08-26-2008 09:59 AM

And Bruce Hill isn't a moderator. He generously gives up his time to maintain the Hardware Compatibility List section.

And with regard to the poll position - let's not try to twist reality, eh. It's not the idea of a poll that is the problem, it is the fact that (as I have already explained) the poll added nothing to the subject at hand. This thread was already in existence, the second and third threads were identical to this one apart from the poll. That is why the threads were closed, not because there is anti-poll sentiment.

Anyway, I hope that that is now sufficient information for those who see conspiracies where there are none. Can we now get this thread back on subject and return to discussing the poll please.

You are correct, I'm not a moderator. Nor did I or anyone else in this
thread make such a claim.

Please enlighten me. There is no poll, and the thread title is
Slackware new logo - so why didn't you merge a poll thread, or
add the poll to this thread?

And how would "return to discussing the poll" get this thread back OT?

XavierP 08-26-2008 10:14 AM

Whoops, mistype there! I meant to say logo. I have now typed the word "poll" more in the last few days than I have in the last few years.

To clarify, to get the thread back on track, can we return to discussing the logo please.

hail to new logo!

hey!
iīm ok with new logo , while i think that it is:
not modern looking - typewriter style fonts, courier, etc were cool back in 95, imho.
the logo is hardly impressive in small sizes, nice orb with (reversed?) "s" as a sign wonīt hurt i think.
i cannot say itīs a beautiful logo, while it got some impertinent attitude that compensates the lack of appeal.
i did not like the line below the old version of the logo, now there is 2 of them - no liking, itīs almost like a box.
"s" letter needs additional tweaking to look more like "e" when reversed, i guess there is not much threat to not look like "s" any more even with more tweaking.

thatīs my criticism with the logo when trying to reason my point of view about traditional logo design, but still iīd rather see the new logo to stay. it is anticommercial if you ask me (huh, i know nobody ever asks).

farewell to all!

You think Pat V is gonna read these now 14 pages to make up his mind on the Slackware logo. If I were him I would not. So this thread has no purpose. I resign.
