If you have windows installed then you can download the WINmodem drivers and the kernel and get them from windows partition!

Well, something had to fall out, but I think they coulda dropped ki18n or whatever the hell. What kind of modem do you have? I was able to sort of somewhat compile mine without the source (which I've since downloaded) by telling it some stuff was in /usr/includes.

But how are you online posting this if you can't get online without the winmodem driver?

Actually, Slackware does offer the kernel source on CD. It comes in a 4 CD set you can buy from slackware.com.

Hiya h1tman,

I believe that the bare kernel (if u chose it as default) should come with NTFS read, and FAT32 Read/Write. Give it a shot at mounting your NTFS partitions.

Good Luck!

Congrats on getting your modem working! OK, for the second part of your question, I assume you already got the sources for the latest stable kernel version (which is 2.4.21).

Now, untar it somewhere and, grab the config file which should be in /boot (If it's a symlink than grab the target instead), and save it as .config in your kernel source directory (note the DOT).

After that, do make mrproper, and then proceed with make menuconfig. To optimize for your specific processor type, you should change the Processor type and features section and select the actual processor that you are using. You can customize a boatload of other features if you know what you're doing... but if u're not brave enough, then this'll do for now.

I'd suggest you check out the sticky Kernel Compilation for Newbies thread on top of this forum for your reference on what to do next.

<Edit>
Bargh... forgotten about the Music CD part... first advise: Do not attempt to mount music CDs!. Just play it with your favourite CD player. Make sure you have the correct entry in your /etc/fstab for your CD drive.

This keeps going round and round. Slackware has a 4 CD set one of the CDs includes a book of all things, in HTML format that explains how to recompile your kernel. This subsequently happens to be the CD with the kernel source on it.

h1tman, first of all you aren't going to get much help if by being rude to members here. It would also help to give as much detail as possible about your problem. With that said, I'll see if I can give you some advice.

1. Make sure you have an audio cable connected from the CDdrive that you are trying to use, to your soundcard.

2. Test to make sure your soundcard is setup properly by playing some systems sounds or mp3s.

3. Make sure your /etc/fstab is setup correctly for your cdrom drives. Posting your fstab along with your actual hardware specifics would allow people to help you much better.

3. Make sure that you have specified the correct device in whatever cdplayer that you are using. /dev/hdb is the slave on IDE1, /dev/hdc is master on IDE2 and /dev/hdd is slave on IDE2. In Gnome cdplayer for example, go to the preferences and make sure the device listed there is correct.

4. If none of this works, you might have to create symbolic links to your actual cdrom devices, and then change the permissions on these links so that your users can access then (which is what people generally do to setup their dvd/cdrw) drives anyway. I plan on posting an example of how I setup my dvd/cdrw drives soon, so that may be able to help you.

This should help you get started.

I'm just giving out information. I said nothing offensive. You can choose to listen or ignore a suggestion. Although when you blatenly ignore a suggestion and then ask another question which was already answered, if you had just listened in the first place. . . . The help here is free, nobody here owes you anything.
