Unhappy slackware login command line isnt working

I log in as root then i type #startx and several variations of #startx. eg. startx, #start x, # startx and #xorgconfig. The command line isn't running them it, is not saying that the command doesn't exist but it doesnt do anything. Also i used adduser but it didn't work either.
thanks
