I jsut recently went from RehHat 7.3 to Slackware 9.0 and I am haveing a problem with my sound card. I can not get my sound to work what so ever. This is the error I get when I bootup:

Sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver:

can't set requested samplingrate (requested rate 44100, got rate 32000)

the sound server will continue, using the null output device

My sound is onboard SIS 7018, I am useing the ECS K7SEM mobo. If anyone can help I will be greatful. Thanks

I am not familar with what driver that chipset would use. It may be that the kernel drivers are not able to handle the sound device properly. You might want to check out the alsa project for sound support. It could be possible that your Redhat system was using alsa drivers for the sound support.

http://www.alsa-project.org/

You can use the console command lsmod to list the loaded modules. If you see one that looks like it is for the sound then you might want to add it to the /etc/hotplug/blacklist to prevent it from loading on boot. If they are loaded it would prevent the alsa drivers from loading.

After you boot your system, login, and before you startx. You are at a command prompt for the console. Enter the command "lsmod". It will report the loaded modules. I would think these are mostly loaded by the new hotplug system. The items at the top are the last loaded modules. I suspect that your current sound driver is near the top. It may have have two or three modules that were loaded to provide other support items. But if you stop the main sound module from loading the rest of the sound modules should not load either. The editor "pico" is a good editor to start with. Use pico to edit the /etc/hotplug/blacklist file and add your sound module to the end of list and save the file. After you reboot the sound module should not be loaded and you could then load the alsa drivers once you have them downloaded, built and installed.

pico /etc/hotplug/blacklist
