i have installed a couple distros of linux just to check them out and my friend recently told me slackware is his favorite distro so i downloaded the iso from linuxiso.org and when i looked at the file it didnt have a autoexe.bat (i think thats what its called) and i thought u needed that to boot from a cd. do you need to do anything special for slackware? and do i have to compile the kernel myself cause im not sure? thanks
ok i burned the cd normally and as i suspected it didnt boot. i have all the boot orders set up so i boot from my cd rom b4 my hd. do you guys know whats wrong? i know i burned it rite and everything which tells me it can only be 1 thing and thats that it wont boot from the cd because of some file needed (as i said b4 i thought cd's needed auto run files to be booted from). if anyone can help please do and if you dont know whats going on just tell me exactly 1)where u downloaded slack from 2)what u did b4 u burned the file. thanks. help will be greatly appreciated
ps:i burned it exactly as i have always burned my linux distros (as an image in nero).
ok i have the mandrake iso's and they a an autourn.exe in them but slack doesnt. now that must be the reason its not booting but what do i do? can someone check their iso of slackware and see if it has a autorun.exe or something i should check and make sure myne has. thanks again

The autorun.exe in mandrake dist. is for you can begin the installation from windows. But as far as i know, it's the only one that can do that. I think that when the cd doesn't boot it's because you have to make a boot disk.
not sure of your insistent on the autoexec.bat in the cd. cd 1 and cd 2 of slackware 9.1 is for booting straight from your pc(via a reboot), not within Windows environment. Once the cd starts, an installer will take over, very simple.
Make sure you burn the .iso file as an image, not as a normal file. As we've all said, you do not need any stuff like an autorun.bat or anything like that. Burning as an image makes the CD bootable!
I'd guess you're probably using some windows app like Nero to burn your images. If you're using Nero, then go File -> burn image then select your .iso/s, its as simple as that!
It'll make a bootable floppy that acts like a bootmanager and when it boots you will be given the option of which device to boot the box from, select cdrom and you'l then be on your way.
I've just retired an old PII I had to do this with every time I wanted to do a clean slack install from a cd.
