slackware install problem no gdm or kdm

I have been trying to install slackware 12.2 on a old dell celeron 700 and 256mb ram. I hit enter at prompt to do install and I did not see any problems during it. I get to reboot to start 1st time and it stops at prompt. I login as root. I try to start the gui with startx , start x.
I edit the runlevel to 4 it was 3. when I rebooted it stopped saying no kdm or gdm installed.
any ideas to fix this? I am still in learning phase

gdm is not installed unless you install (an external version of) gnome. kdm is only installed if you installed KDE. The system should have searched for xdm after the above two, so you may have to check your installation of X, to ensure that xdm is present.

Sounds as if you only installed CD1, or maybe CD2 as well (partly), but none of CD3.
