Slackware in name only
I don't get what you want to say with your post.
You have found a Slackware mirror on an American school, actually a nice one, they host Slackware back to version 3.0. |
Other than providing mirror services for free, what should a "vanity" host name (it's an alias for mirror-vip.cs.utah.edu actually) have to do with the distribution itself? The .com, 'pkg and 'book .org sites don't fly their colors either.
I think dugan was referring to slackware.cs.utah.edu being hosted by an Ubuntu server.
Would you rather it be Ubuntu than Windows Server?
I'm going with it's running Ubuntu Server in a vm, Slackware host. Ya, that's the ticket....
cheers, |
A big organization like that would probably want to simplify it's server deployment. Ubuntu server has no shortage of management utilities for sysadmins. For an IT policymaker, its a no brainer.
On the other hand, all you can really say is that they are running "something". Output of server / OS configuration can be modified at will.
It's not a competition dugan, it's a collaborative effort.
Not to forget that the same server also hosts CentOS, Gentoo, Knoppix, Suse and Ubuntu mirrors, together with a whole bunch of open source projects.
I saw the title and thought dugans post was going to be a rant about how GConf is now officially part of Slackware.
:runs away giggling maniacally: |
A mildly funny post that turned into something else. Somebody ought to move this to General.

There's a big, powerful server (of which I do not know what its O.S. is). It has slackware in the url to the slackware mirror portion from the overall of what they have. -- Alan. |
