Fixed

I have a Dell Dimension 2350 with a screwed up graphics card (intel extreme graphics card). I tried numerous distros (slackware 10.1 , Arch linux, vector linux) and the only which reconzied my graphics card was mepis. I have used mepis in the past and do not like it due to the fact of its package management. I need something slack based with excellent harddware detection preferably for the intel extreme graphics card. I hate not running Slackware. I like to install from source only not the apt-get BS. if anyone know of slackware based distro with excellent hardware detection, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx. BTW slax reconized my graphics card just fine.

i'm not sure i understand the problem you're presenting.

if it's an x issue, i would first boot into slax and compare that x config file with the one you use in slack. perhaps there's a solution there.
if it works in slax ( / almost any other current distro), nothing i'm aware of would prevent it from working in slackware other than misconfiguration.

securitybreach 04-17-2005 06:26 PM

I go throught xorgsetup and xorgconfig with no luck. Since I have no X I cannot email the xorg.conf to myself. I tired and tried to use lynx without any luck. . At one point, I had the gui working with weird colors whenever I maximized a window. The taskbar would turn pink. The problem is I have a Dell E772d monitor that didnt come with my harddware and I dont know the correct verticle and horizontal refresh rates. I wish there was a way I could get a xorg.conf that would work with the Intel Extreme 2 graphics card with Slackware 10.1. Thanx

Also, I have one computer so its either X works or I have nothing to compare it to. I need to have a Slackware distro not DEBIAN. If anyone has any suggestions it would help out alot. Since I am a Slacker now.

dell e772d: 30-70 hz horizontal, 50-160 hz vertical. try 1024x768 at 85 hz. (google results)

every non-java webmail client i've used works with lynx/links, so get a free webmail account (if you don't already have one).

maybe you should post your xorg.conf

securitybreach 04-17-2005 07:03 PM

I had to install mepis to finish online schoolwork. I think I will attempt it again since I have gotten all my schoolwork done for the next day. I tried from about 3pm till 2:20am yesterday to get my xorg working , only did I install mepis after no luck with all the distros I had on cdrom. Also, when using lynx getting xorg.conf from gmail account whenever I highlighted attatchment and pressed "d" it downloaded the link to it not the actual file.

rahmed 04-17-2005 07:32 PM

why cant u email it to urself while in slax? or if that doesnt work dont u have like a floppy disk drive to put ur xorg.conf file on?

ringwraith 04-17-2005 08:31 PM

mail clients aren't all just X apps. You should learn to use some of them just as an excercise. For example, mutt or pine.

capnpayne 04-17-2005 08:41 PM

don't send it as an attachment next time... just copy and paste the text into the message body.

dell e772d: 30-70 hz horizontal, 50-160 hz vertical. try 1024x768 at 85 hz worked.

Thanx capnpayne

One more thing my sound isnt working. I have ran alsaconfig, alsamixer, and aumix. I also have unmuted all mixers and went into xine and xmms and changed mixer to alsa. Still no sound. I also tried the instructions from http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/308291 with no luck either.

securitybreach,I have a similar problems on X window like you.

Here's the specification of my Dell Notebook:
Quote:

CPU: Intel Centrino 1.2GHZ
RAM: 384MB DDR PC2100
Hard drive: 30GB
Graphic Card:Integrated Intel 855GM Chipset
The most important point is the graphic card.I have seen many cases which causes lots of problems.[can't be detected...]I can't find an easy way out to figure this out. So,I would like to ask you how to fix your problem in details regarding graphic card.

Thanks for your help.

securitybreach 04-18-2005 11:44 AM

before starting X run /usr/X11R6/bin/xorgconfig. You will need your monitor specs. Go through it all the way and whenever it asks if you want to look in card database type yes. The Intel card showed up here for me. Then under Graphics in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "VESA Framebuffer"
Driver "i810"
VideoRam 4096

These values should be there after running xorgconf. It took me forever to find this information.

Hope this helps

Swift&Smart 04-19-2005 11:43 AM

no such driver

securitybreach,thanks for your help. :)

However,my graphic card is using Intel 845 GM Chipset rather than your i810.Furthermore,I can't find my graphic card driver in the card database.... :(

I am about to give up but with a little hope on it because I do like using Slackware.

eeades 04-19-2005 10:23 PM

The XOrg driver for all of the Intel integrated graphics cards is the i810 driver. Choosing that one should do the trick. If you want openGL 3d, you also have to uncomment the DRI line near the beginning of the xorg.conf file.

Regarding the AC'97 sound controller, I had some problems getting this to work. The alsactl utility didn't produce a working configuration file. I only picked up on this problem from a very terse one line error message output during boot up. I ended up editing the configuration file by hand and now all is well.
