which I have made manually. Thanks for pointing me to this link.
However the answer came to me through the message:
"Unable to locate printer "BRW008092AE60AB"." On googling around this I saw that Brother printers often need a direct address rather than the naming convention used here. So I assigned the printer a static address, stopped cups and altered the DeviceURI section of /etc/cups/printers.conf to read the following:

DeviceURI socket://192.168.0.11
then restarted cups and the printer roared to life. I know there are more elegant ways to alter this config file and I am ready to be corrected on this, lpadmin was a little fiddly and seemed to be accomplishing the same goal..
I experimented a little with
ldp and
socket but the docs recommend
socket if supported so I went with that. And as always with Slackware I have learnt a little more
