Slackware current packages question
Can any of those packages released to slackware current be used with slackware 8.1? For example I would like to update my OpenSSH 3.4 and proftpd 1.2.5, but there are no patches to them for slackware 8.1. There is Openssh 3.5 packet for slackware current that attracts me.

Why don`t you just compile newest version from source and make sure it will fit perfectly into your system.

If you need bleeding edge updates then I second the recommendation by AxeZ. You will probably also require OpenSSL as well to go with OpenSSH. Check your current installed location and set the prefix accordingly, and it should go well.
On proftp, if I recall correctly when I last did an update, I had to set the install prefix AND enable MD5 encryption when I built the package.

Slackware current is compiled with gcc-3.2 and slackware-8.1 is compiled with gcc-2.95.3, it's not a good idea to mix the two.

My suggestion is to make yourself an iso of the slackware-current tree and install it. There are instructions in slackware-current/isolinux on how to make bootable install iso's of slackware-current.
