slackware current and NVIDIA drivers

I have installed the latest NVIDIA Drivers but all is messed up!!!!!!!!!!!

a lot of desktop object (I use KDE) are transparent, I mean menu, windows, ecc. totally transparent so Linux is impossible to use!

using an old driver version, apparently the desktop is ok (no transparency problems) but I think the driver is not working correctly, because the max refreah is 60 hz (usually it's the frequency I use before the drvier installation, but after the correct driver installation, I get about 85 hz with the same hardware)

another example, if I try to use MPlayer with OpenGL display option, I get no video at all!
if drivers were correctly installed, NVIDIA cards support OpenGL

with slackware 10 there was no problems, but now I have installed a lot of devices and software, it's a big problem go back now

thanks a lot in advance

are you using the latest nvidia drivers? I have no problem with running Slackware current but I have not upgraded to the latest nvidia drivers coz they gave me hell in Fedora Core 3.

win32sux 11-12-2004 07:22 PM

i can attest that nvidia drivers 1.0-6629 (currently the latest ones) don't work properly on my slackware 10.0 box...

i removed them and installed the previous release, 1.0-6111, and that one works fine for me...

with 1.0-6629, everything would be a mess and transparent and all mucked-up with the nvidia logo everywhere, hard to explain... couldn't do anything, had to kill the x server and go back to runlevel 3 to remove the drivers and install the previous (working) version...

Xavius 11-12-2004 08:21 PM

I had that effect with drivers version 6629

Now I'm using the old driver version, but I suspect the driver aren't correctly installed, because I think my sistem is worse than when I installed in slackware 10

For example in slackware 10, after the driver installation, I use a refresh rate of 85
I cannot use it now, with slackware current and the driver 1.0-6111

I can use only a refresh rate of 60 hz...... it's a low rate don't you think?

How can I test if drivers are correctly installed and working?

you could try downgrading x.org to the version in 10.0 to test if the issue persists... i'm sorry for not having any better ideas... =(

well, a simple test would be to run glxgears...

Xavius 11-12-2004 08:56 PM

glxgears starts, but my max refresh rate is always 60 Hz,

now I know I can seem a bit paranoic about this, but, with the same hardware and screen resolution (1024x768) it's about 85 with Windows and it was something like this in Slackware Linux 10 too (after the video card driver were installed) now I have only 60 Hz (like in Slackware 10 without the drivers installed)

Well so it's not just Fedora with a problem with these new drivers then. I was going mental coz I just couldn't get them to work.

i think you'd need to download the source code and build scripts for the version in 10.0 and compile it cuz if you use the binary from 10.0 you might have some issues... i'm not sure...

the source (and build scripts) for x11 from 10.0 is here:

ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar.../source/x/x11/

once the packages are built, you should be able to do a regular "removepkg" and "installpkg" cycle...

if anything goes wrong just remove them and re-install the x11 from current...

if you wanna risk it with a 10.0 binaries, they are here:

With Slackware-current and the 2.6.9 kernel, Nvidia 1.0-6629 works well with my GeForce4MX440 64M AGP, but completely futz a Riva TNT 32M PCI card in a dual-head box. I went back to the 1.0-6111 driver and both cards work fine. The TNT has worked with any of the Nvidia released drivers I've tried, up to 6629.
Don't know what's up, but somethings different this time around.

win32sux 11-13-2004 01:16 PM

yeah, mine's a tnt2 m64 32mb agp...

sounds like this bug is affecting lots of folks, i guess/hope it'll be fixed in the next version, so we can all enjoy the latest drivers...

does nvidia have a bugzilla or something like that??

reddazz 11-13-2004 02:19 PM

mine is a riva tnt2 M64 32 MB card and it wouldn't work with 6629. There is definitely something different this time around.

this sounds like it's an unrelated issue... you should probably start your own thread...
