slackware-current and alsa

hi i'm moving away from mandrake for obvious reasons and so far im pleased with the way my laptop runs with slackware, however im having problems with my sound.

after install i log in as root and run alsaconf, and so it configures my sound card, if i run alsamixer this is what i get:

mike@darkstar:~$ alsamixer
No mixer elems found

when i do an lspci i have this:

root@darkstar:/home/mike# lspci

Create a new group sound. Add your self to sound.
Code:
chgrp sound /dev/snd* /dev/mixer* /dev/dsp*
Then
Code:
chmod 660 /dev/snd*
chmod 660 /dev/mixer*
chmod 660 /dev/dsp*
Log out and back in.

on another note, i dont hink that this has anything to do with the 2.4.25 kernel, even with mandrake 9.2 i was able to have sound and fecora core 2. i also have the latest alsa packages so it's not that either... strange isn't it?

I just encountered this problem by going to Slack current (kernel 2.4.26).

Add the following line in /etc/hotplug/blacklist

snd-intel8x0m

This is the ALSA driver for the Intel810 AC97 Software Modem.
It wasn't in the older kernels.
Somehow it conflicts with the Intel810 AC97 soundcard driver: snd-intel8x0.

Reboot
Run alsaconf
then alsamixer

It works for me.

There is probaby be a way to prevent this conflict.
I use the slamr module (from Smartlink slmodem-2.9.6) for the modem.

This same problem has popped up in kernel 2.6.6 too, astronanard's solution works well.

You can also select not to compile support for "Intel i8x0/MX440; AMD768/8111 modems (EXPERIMENTAL)".

Run ./snddevices in the alsa-driver source.

woohoo!

Astronanard:

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

That was driving me crazy!

Blacklisting snd-i8x0m worked like a charm on my Toshiba satellite 1415.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hi ,
even I was having the same problem. What I could figure out was that there were two sound card modules getting loaded (I compiled two different sound card modules in my 2.6.6 kernel). The actual sound card was getting an id number 1 and the non-existent sound card was getting id number 0. So when I ran
'alsamixer -c 1', it showed the mixer settings of my sound card but plain 'alsamixer' gave the 'Elems' error. I was able to set up the second card in xmms but not in other applications. So I recompiled my kernel by selecting only my sound card module and everything worked fine.

Question Something is missing??

I have got a question after seeing your posts. Before blacklisting snd-i8x0m did any of you had snd-i8x0 loaded?

snd-i8x0m and snd-i8x0 are two different modules but from the same alsa version. It's strange that they would conflic.

Maybe what happens is that the correct sound module is baddly detectec and that module snd-i8x0m is used instead of snd-i8x0m.

So you only have to check if you've got the correct modules in your /etc/modules.conf (or /etc/modprobe.conf)
alias sound-slot-0 snd-i8x0

Maybe you got here something like this:
alias sound-slot-0 snd-i8x0m
