Having the 2.4 kernel is one thing.. Although its stable, but i can vouch for the stability of 2.6.9 and above.. But anyway, Slack 10.1 is still on GCC 3.3.5. gcc.gnu.org says that 3.3.6

There's the 3.4.x release, which is up to 3.4.4 now, And there's even GCC 4.0.0 out.

I'm sure there's a good reason for the continuing use of 3.3.x, be it performance or security, stability, whatever.. but isn't it time we see a jump to atleast 3.4.x?

actually, slackware 10.1 is on gcc 3.3.4... slackware current is currently on gcc 3.3.5, AFAIK...

but either way, if you take a look in the testing directory of 10.1 or current you'll find packages for gcc 3.4.3...

i seriously doubt any slackware packages will be built with gcc 4.x until it's spent a good amount of time in the testing directory...

Also, how come Pat announces updates for Slack/390, but not for Slamd64, Minislack, or Splack ?

Of those, only slack/390 is official. The rest are unoffical ports, thus not his responsibility, and he gives no guarrantee on them.

Maybe you should run --current? Hes updated 3 time in the past 2 days. It has KDE 3.4.1. That sounds pretty current and not out of date.

It's funny how rumours, misapprehensions and half truths spread and continue to propagate.

Only today, I was singing Slackware's praises to my NetWare consultant, a man whose skills, knowledge and judgement I hold in the highest regard when he interrupted, "Oh Slackware, the best that '95 has to offer."

Just goes to prove nobody's right all the time.

well you could say debian hasn't had a release in forever. Or like FC, mandrake, Suse... and crank out releases (crappy releases) that don't work, slow and crash. I prefer to compile what works. Would you buy a car that can go 200mph but will only start 50% of the time? I'll take a truck that gets the job done.
