Slackware and what it should have, you decide!

From the slackware community I need help.

What would YOU like to see slackware linux have by default.
It can be anything as long as its reasonable.

Why I am asking is because I am going to start making a slackware based linux distribution but I do not want it half assed. I want the community support on this one.

So please tell me, what would you like included?

Cerbere 01-31-2004 03:39 AM

Reasonable? Half-assed? What do these terms mean to you? Or to the Slackware community? To some people KDE is beyond reason, while to others Gnome is half-assed.

The way I see it, Slack already has everything that's reasonable and then some, and I'd be surprised if many people in this forum find it half-assed. Different people have different needs and/or desires. Each distro is only meant to be a starting point. If you want something that isn't included, then download the source and compile it.

If you're interested in making your own distro, it should fill some void. The most common interpretation of this truism is to appeal to some niche market, that is by making a specialized distro. So you're going to have to set some guidelines for what your distro should do. I don't think it's possible simply to make a distro that's 'like Slack only better', because 'better' is a pretty nebulous concept. What is better to some, is bloat to others.

Enjoy!

I like slack because a full install is only around 2gigs or so... And it has everything that i need installed. Light Desktops heavy... I think it gives you everything you need already.

*I* myself will not be switching to anthother distro on my home computer again ever.. Slackware is here to stay for me

Astro 01-31-2004 12:59 PM

I agree with trey, why make yet another distro based on slackware? or any other distro for that matter. Theres already way too many out there to even think of trying them or liking them. Most have way to little support or are just personal ones someone published that noone will ever use. IMHO you're better off just using slackware and adding your quirks to it yourself. I built my own LFS system once, and once I got done with the hours of compiling and cross compiling and all that good stuff, I found myself with a slackware based distro, with a bsd style init system and no package management.... if I installed pkgtool I'd have slackware for the most part and there was no point to having it anymore, I promptly reinstalled. Anyway, my point... why waste your time making a whole new one when you can just add you stuff to another? Not to be mean at all because I respect wanting to do your own, I wanted to as well... but noone will use it really, heh the only thing you get is the personal satisfaction out of it, which should be enough to do it. Again I'm not trying to be flamebait here but I'm just stating my opinions.

trey85stang 01-31-2004 04:23 PM

Just wwanted to add to my post.. along with Astro, what i said is not intended as a flame. If you want to build a distro, thats awesome! thats what linux is about!

There was a thread a lot like this that may be helpful - I think it was this one: thread

That's classic. I've been meaning to try LFS for a long time but I do keep wondering what I'd do different, really. I mean, I might try to see how violently I could break FHS and so on but, otherwise, I'll probably just end up with Slack, myself. (Although probably a very bad non-functional Slack, in my case. *g*) And that's probably the ultimate answer to all those 'What's so great about Slackware?' threads: 'If I built it myself, it wouldn't be any different.'

-- Hey. That thread I linked to was started by you, Astro. :D

Astro 01-31-2004 04:55 PM

I don't think trying to do your own thing, for anyone, is a bad thing in the least... Building my own LFS system I learned an unimaginable amount about how the guys that actually go about writing and putting together software for an OS do it. If you really wanna know how things work then go for it, get your hands dirty, and when you mess up ask your questions- Thats the only way you're going to get anything out of it. The LFS guys have a good thing started there... I never imagined I'd want to try a LFS system, but then I got bored with what I had learned and I wanted to know more of how it works. (personally I'd like to see a "linux" on howthingswork.com :p) but anyways, if you want to learn a bit about how things work with a system, what does what, and more specifically how to make one, got for it by all means. And if you fail don't give up trying, keep asking questions and reading.

Hmm... never heard of these.
Actually, less familiar with most other "smaller" Slackware-based distros except College and Vector Linuces.
(index x 2 = indices, linux x 2 = linuces ?)
The latter two do have their own forums as noted above.

Hey, why not just ask the forum moderators to create a subforum in "Linux -- Distributions" called "Other Slackware-Based" for College Linux, Vector Linux, and the other "smaller" Slackware-based Linux distros, but not including the original Pat Volkerding / Walnut Creek Slackware ?? College and Vector Linuces would then fall into this "Other Slackware-Based" subforum, instead of each being separate forums as they are now.
(actually, I already suggested this :D )

I like slack cause it installs what you need + basics of what u want and lets you do everything u want yourself to make sure it is right, stable, and not overblown, no changes here :-D oh wait, 1, bring enlightenment back to the pre-packaged list :-D
