Slackware and hardware configuration
 

Hi
I'm quite new to Linux. I can find my way around on the shell and stuff, but
I've got some problems configuring my Hardware under Slackware.
Mouse, Sound, 3d Graphic Card features, network, TV-Card, and ISDN won't work after installation..... and I don't know how to configure it manually.
I'd appreciate any help, links to other resources, or if you'd tell me known troubles with the hardware I've got.

Slackware 9.1

Asus P4P800 Mainboard
Sound OnBoard, SoundMAX
Asus V9520-Magic-T GeForceFX5200
Intel P4 FSB 800 HT
512 MB DDR 400
Hauptauge WinTV Go2
AVM Fritz! Card USB
Logitech Cordless Desktop MX
IDE1: Harddrives: Seagate 160GB(Master),Samsung 40GB(Slave)
IDE2: DVD-Drive(Master), CD-R(Slave)

I got a WindowsXP installation on my Master-Drive.
I want to install Slackware on Slave.
How do I configure the bootloader to detect Windows?

I know that this is quite a lot of information I need. But I am really new to Linux internals and stuff, so please forgive me ;)

As root :

Mouse, 3d Graphic Card features, TV-Card - run xf86config

Sound - run alsaconfig then when sorted type alsactl store. Make sure mixer volumes are up with alsamix or aumix.

network and ISDN - try netconfig.

However... xf86config didn't work for my mouse....
It is attached to PS/2 and my keyboard is USB
any ideas what I might have done wrong??

Try XF86Setup and see if that get's you closer.

If not let us know what mouse and keyb it is and post the relevant parts of your /etc/XF86Config file (or is it /etc/X11/XF86Config????)

Common mixup :) ...it's called xfree86setup (it's in /usr/X11R6/bin/). Or perhaps you were referring to something else? And yeah, XF86Config is in /etc/X11/. :)

Cheers nvn, I'm not near me slack box so I couldn't check and was referring to me linux essentials 1st edition book. Which is Slack 7.1 I think.

Yeah, I just intended to possibly make the thread a little less confusing to c31c...I hope I didn't come across as trying to be l33t or something (which I most certainly am not :)). Cheers to you too.

thank you guys....but now I am facing another problem...I had Suse9.0 installed to test if it is any good...unbelievable enough: it crashes all the time; e.g. "sometimes" when I use Kinternet to dial-in....
and now I want to install Slack again.
But I doesn't work....My second harddrive won't be recognized by the Slackware CD setup kernel.
However I have grub installed on the MBR of my Master Drive, running WinXP, and I can still boot Suse on my slave drive....
How do I install slackware on that slave drive and configure a boot loader, so I can choose between WinXP and slackware?
