Slackware and Fluxbox
1 Attachment(s)
In preparation for my new Slackware 14.1 install, I am considering a different desktop than KDE. I am comfortable with xfce but I see Fluxbox is also an option. I have no experience with Fluxbox but those who use it have high praise on it's behalf.
From the Fluxbox site, I can't seem to access their wiki for further information. I get the resulting error message (screenshot). I would like to hear some input from Fluxbox users, both pro and con regarding the learning curve for this DE. Thanks.:) |
Fluxbox user here. I am very satisfied with it (of course! else why would I use it?).
There is nothing to learn to begin using it. Just use middle and right click to see what you get. About the wiki: I do not know what leaded you to this "File not found". It is easily accessed from this page: http://fluxbox.org/help/ see here: http://fluxbox-wiki.org/ that page also leads you to a FAQ: http://fluxbox-wiki.org/FAQ_en.html So there is no shortage of useful information, I think. One word of advice: try it. It's the only way to know if you will like it. |
Another Fluxbox user here. My advice: go for it :)

slack and flux are perfect together imo

Thanks for the thumbs up and the links.:D

After a while it becomes tiresome waiting for KDE WM to load up. I always end up on Fluxbox. Still use KDE apps - they are great, but the WM - not so much.

Slackware and Fluxbox
Hi, I recently switch from kde for another wm but no DE and I am not a fluxbox user.
I use i3 wm which is a tiling wm. Have a look, it's really astonishing and I fell straight in love with it. |
All my systems are Fluxed!
Slackware and Fluxbox - just doesn't get much better than that for me! |

Although it is off topic, I noticed this under your name, "Slackware-current with grub2" Is the grub bootloader available on install as an option in 14.1? |
Some while ago, the Fluxbox wiki was moved to github. I follow the links to there and it seems to have disappeared.
However, if you are at http://fluxbox-wiki.org/index.html# and click the little arrow to the right of the "Languages" item in the title bar, then select a language, you will be presented with a number of how-to pages. I am also a satisfied Fluxbox user--I use it on my FreeBSD and PCBSD VMs, as well as on Slack and Mint (I use Enlightenment on Magiea--E is my second favorite). The configuration files you need primarily to learn how to configure are Code:
.fluxbox/menu |

In Slackware I think that you can still use it although in a slightly convoluted way. Caveat emptor: I didn't that try yet, I just assume that should work:

One thing that could be a problem with fluxbox is networkmanager.
I use networkmanager to get on the internet with a wifi setup. The problem is that I cannot use fluxbox, because the program for networkmanager setup is ran by clicking on a gui target with your mouse. I don't get any such click point on fluxbox. There is one there on kde and xfce. So if you want to use networkmanager to get on internet, you may have trouble using fluxbox. Maybe there is some way to run the setup program that someone knows. If there is some command you can execute in an xterm, then maybe you don't need that click point showing up on your display. Anyone know how to run networkmanager setup without the gui thingy or anyone know where to find that hidden gui click point for networkmanager setup on fluxbox? |

Not sure, however, whether fluxbox natively has a tray, if it doesn't - you'll have to find one that suits you. EDIT: Fluxbox does support system tray out of box, see bottom of this page. |
Another Fluxbox-user here. I use Fluxbox at work and at home. I use Fluxbox because it is very easy to customize however you want.
