I have been a long time user of Slackware but then went to Ubuntu for a while, but know I am coming back to Slackware. But, there is one thing about Ubunutu with gnome I got really used to. The auto mounting and icon appearing when you insert a USB drive or camera or insert a cd/dvd disc.

Some quick research revealed HAL and the such. So, my question, is this auto mounting feature avaiable under Slackware using xfce or gnome? And, if so, what is involved in its setup?

Yes.

If you use KDE or XFCE, then those devises are auto-mounted. There's a cool task bar widget in KDE that shows the mounted devices and makes a menu of appropriate actions for them. Right click on the task bar, and look for something like "Add Tool." Scroll through and you'll see the widget I'm talking about.

It can be done, and can be done easily in KDE, XFCE, and Gnome, but ...

1) You need to make sure you setup your users properly. For this to work for users, they must be part of the plugdev group. If you create users with "adduser" in an xterm or from the console, read the prompts carefully the first time you do it and things will be obvious. Basically, you are prompted for two sets of groups, the initial group (defaults to users, which is generally fine) and additional groups. Make sure plugdev is one of the additional groups. In newer Slackware, you can cursor up at this stage to get a default recommended list.

2) Slackware nolonger comes with Gnome out of the box. You need to install it separately. I've been using "Gnome Slackbuild" for a while and it works nicely (google for "GSB slackware"). For the truly masochistic (or sufficiently clever) I've heard garnome works well too.

3) In KDE, you can play with config settings to have icons show up or not when things are inserted and mounted or not. GSB gnome it defaults to opening the drive when you plug it in or insert the disk.

In KDE you also must have the KDED Media Manager and Media Notifier Daemon services enabled to start. Look in Control Center, KDE Components, Service Manager.
