Slackware 9 install kernel issues

For a school project, we're attempting to install Slackware 9 on a Dell PowerEdge server. The server has two SCSI adapters, one being a Dell RAID controller, and the other being an Adaptec controller which connects the CD-ROM and tape backup device.

When installing Slackware, we've been unsuccessful in getting both the CD-ROM and RAID working. If we use the adaptec kernel, the CD works fine, but we have no RAID. If we use the raid kernel, the RAID works, but alas no CD.

Does anybody know of a way around this? I was wondering if it was possible to create a custom kernel to install with, but don't have the slightest idea how to go about doing that.

You'll have to look onthe net for compiling the kernel or do a search on the forums. The two kernels will have support for only one of the devices not both at the same time which is something that you'll have to do for the compile

Thanks. I know how to compile a standard kernel, but I'm not sure how to exactly use the kernel I compile to install slackware. If anybody knows of a good URL that explains this, I'd appreciate it, thanks.

Just get it installed....so basically you can boot and log in. Then compile the kernel with support for whatever you need. Then when you reboot with the new kernel you will have support for everything. There is a good tutorial sticky thread at the top of this forum.
