ok my configure works fine. it gives me no errors after configure. just after i do a "make" and the errors it gives me are the ones i posted. so i will try the linuxpackages one. thanks for all your help guys.
I was reading this thread and since I have a similar problem I decided to post my issue here too =).
I recently installed Slackware 9.1 on my Gericom Laptop and like 2 days ago i tried to install the MPlayer (i really like this media player). I had some problems and with the help of a friend of mine I realized that somehow some packages were missing during the Slackware installation (actually the Compiler and other essential packages). After that i installed these packages manually and then everything worked fine, at least with the /.configure part.
The problems came with the "make" part. In the console is this message to read:
...
/usr/include/bits/local_lim.h :36:26 linux/limits.h : No such file or directory
In file included from /usr/include/errno.h:36 from player.c:27:
/usr/include/bits/errno.h 25:26: linux/errno.h : No such file or directory
mplayer.c : In function 'main' :
mplayer.c : 870: 'PATH_MAX' undeclared (first use in this function)
mplayer.c : 870: (each undeclared identifier is reportde only once
mplayer.c : 870: for each function it appears in)
make:*** [mplayer.o] Error 1
My friend adviced me to re-install Slackware but i want to know if there is an easier way to solve the problem, maybe it's just one package i have to install manually =p.
So, if anyone could help me i would really appreciate

I too have mplayer issues.
It built just fine but does not play a thing. Nor does the mplayerplugin play movies.
The mplayer install also "broke" realplayer and the mplayerplugin install broke the rpnp plugin...
There are no errors reported in logs or when running from a console. Realplayer states "can't play file format" something like that... on stuff it had been playing.
The mplayer codecs and fonts where installed prior to the build as required.
Previously on a slack test box they all worked together just fine.
Beats me as to why they went south for the summer...
You can always try reinstall realplayer, create a directory in your home directory (say "mplayer") and configure MPlayer with
./configure --prefix=/home/youruser/mplayer
So it normally won't corrupt any installation because all files will be installed in /home/youruser/mplayer (it may need an update in /etc/ld.so.conf to suit mplayer librairies)
mplayer is a great app, but as i recall, the install was a little tricky. so if you can't get it working take a look at kaffeine . the newest version 0.4.3b is available as a slackpack at linuxpackages.net . be warned it does require xine-lib v1.0rc4a (which is also available at linuxpackages.net).
so if you wanna try it. download the 2 packages. as root, run
- upgradepkg xine-lib***.tgz
this will upgrade your xine lib's. then run
- installpkg kaffeine***.tgz
this will install kaffeine.
kaffeine can then be launched from terminal and it should also add itself to your program menu in KDE. and no, you needn't be using KDE to use kaffeine, but KDE needs to be installed.

I have KDE installed so I will check that out thanks. But I am so curious to know why I cant get a GUI with mplayer. I did a ./configure --enable-gui when I ran a configure, but still nothing. I tried installing skins, but then it says no skin installed. I want to get it working just so I can say that I did, ya know what I mean? Thanks for the tips!
much love,
nikki
If the mplayer was installed to /usr/local, get a skin, extract it and put it /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin . Rename it's folder to 'default'. Then run 'gmplayer'.
I'm quite fond of Totem, myself. You can get it from linuxpackages.net, or from the g/ directory in -current. It uses the Xine libraries, so you'll also need xine-lib installed (in xap/).
Whether you use mplayer, xine, or another player based on one of them, you might also want to consider installing libdvdcss to allow you to read commercial DVDs (but be aware that there are legal issues with it in the US), and win32 codecs (just extract them to /usr/lib/win32) to play wmv, quicktime etc.

Thanks so much for the advice. I got Totem running, but I just HAD to figure out how to get mplayer GUI running as well. After much tinkering, I got them both running. You all are awesome. Thanks so much for the help!!
