Slackware 9.1 user needs advice on movie players plzzzzzzzz!
hey all. i am hoping you guys can offer some more of that great advice again. I want to download a movie player for my system. i am running slack 9.1 and i am overwhelmed with the amount to choose from. i dont want to put dvd's on my puter and watch them, but i want to be able to download a movie and watch it. so if anyone could suggest a program with idiot-proof installation ( since i am still learing ), it would be greatly appreciated. and also, if i am going to need something that will support sound if the program doesnt already i'd like that too. i know i know i ask soooooooo much! LOL. thankx again!
I think mplayer is in the swaret repository.Install swaret and add the repos to your /etc/swaret.conf. swaret packages.
I always prefer to compile it myself Mplayer.

You can also get Slack packages for mplayer (and Xine too, although that's included as mentioned above) here I would recommend a source installation, but as you said, if you're looking for something "idiot-proof" you might want to try those. Good Luck!

ok i tried installing mplayer, but after i compiled it and made it, i did a make install and when it was all done, i got an error 1....what does that mean??? anyone know?
That's really odd... I've compiled mplayer on Slackware 9 & 9.1 without any problems. Did you do a full install of Slack?
Your last attempt mplayer exited out while compiling a codec for some reason. I wonder if your file is corrupt... I would try downloading mplayer again. I can't think what else it could be since I never had any problems with it on the same system. I always installed it soon after installing Slack since it's my favorite player so I doubt I had much else on my system that mplayer might need other than the full Slack install...
What version of mplayer are you trying to install?
In the meantime xine is another good option. It plays most formats 'out of the box' as well. If you want a nice GUI try gxine (also included with Slack 9.1).

Scruff,
yes it is very odd LOL. and yes i am running a full install of Slack. i went back to the MPlayer website and redownloaded the file along with codecs. dont know if that will help. and i am attempting to run MPlayer-0.92. so we'll see if the codecs will do the trick. im crossing my fingers. Nice screenshots btw. thnx for the help.
Could you give us any errors it gives during ./configure? But if that doesn't work, just try and see if you can download the Slack package from www.linuxpackages.net they have different versions of it too I believe. But if you'd prefer to compile it yourself (which is good especially if you want to be able to play something not terribly popular, like Matroska or something) post your config.log and we'll see what we can do.
The version I last installed was MPlayer 1.0pre2 so you might give that a try. Though you can also do as GT_Onizuka suggested and use a precompiled package from linuxpackages. Thats a good site to have bookmarked. They have a ton of Slack-specific packages.
