slackware 9.1 ppp0/unable to ping

I recently installed upgraded to Slackware 9.1 and tried setting
up my dialup modem using pppsetup. In the past, with older
versions of Slackware, I've used dip without any problems.

I am able to login into my ISP, and when I do a cat /var/log/messages, login looks ok and local and remote IP
addresses have been assigned.

ifconfig shows the local IP address setup looks ok
and route -n shows the remote IP address is setup as the
default gateway with netmask 0.0.0.0

My problem is that I can ping the local IP address, but nothing
else. If I try to ping the DNS or the assigned remote IP
nothing happens.

thanks,
jecerise

I used to have similar problems, I never fixed them honestly.. I needed it to connect to the internet, but setup and rh box as a router instead (only use for redhat is there dial tools)

I didn't understand wether you can ping a remote IP or not. Try to access a URL... some ISP may block ICMP traffic. If you cannot access anything but can ping a remote IP that means that you have a DNS problem (try pinging 216.239.57.99, it's google's IP) if you cannot ping the remote IP aswell you have a route problem. Maybe your default gateway is misconfigured and about the dns problem you may have to add manually your ISP's DNS server in the /etc/resolv.conf.

hope that helps

I am currently unable to ping remote IP addresses. I think my nameserver
is ok because I am able to use nslookup to get IP addresses.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

thanks,
jecerise
