I use FVWM 2.5.10 and my fonts seem fine. It is also quite possible I am just used to looking at broken fonts. I added a font path to TTF (included in install but not in the xorg.conf) and rearranged the font path order to put 100dpi fonts directly below the TTF, then the rest to suit. This appeared to fix fonts to me though I admit it may have been a placebo effect.

I did a bit more digging around in the x.org documentation. Maybe this will help? (i.e. remove X-TT)

4.2. Additional notes about scalable core fonts

The FreeType (libfreetype-xtt2) backend (module `freetype', formerly known as xfsft) is able to deal with both TrueType and Type 1 fonts. This puts it in conflict with the X-TT and Type 1 backends respectively.

If both the FreeType and the Type 1 backends are loaded, the FreeType backend will be used for Type 1 fonts. If both the FreeType and X-TT backends are loaded, X-TT will be used for TrueType fonts.

exactly, which is why you need to comment out xtt in your X config file if you're loading freetype. but thanks anyway -- appreciate the effort.

i dunno, from the firefox screenie it looks like mine. I had issues at first as well with the fonts, but going from the gtk 1.* installer to the gtk 2.* installer fixed it. As far as system wide X, I dunno. Ive been spending the last year trying to find a disrto that Im happy with. SO far slack is where I am headed, but its been a pain so far. I spend more time configuring and changing settings then I do actualy using my computer for anything productive. Not that I mind, it is fun, but there is always something isnt there?

sorry for the above rant. I just tried Mandrake for the first time and absolutely am disgusted by it. With all the auto-setup Drak-whatever apps, you'd think it would be able to find a NIC card at boot-up and get an internet connection going! Back to slack and the fonts issue.......

again, I apologize

see sig.

what do you mean by going from gtk 1 to gtk 2 installer? gtk and gtk2 are two separate things, aren't they?

Have you checked if you have autohinting enabled? I've noticed that autohinting has a tremendous effect on the way fonts are rendered.
