slackware 8.1 iso vs slackware current
I'm trying to understand how the slackware distribution works. there is slackware 8.1 and slackware current. i tried to find some where that explained this with no luck. if i download slackware current and make a iso is it going to be the same as the 8.1.iso that i can download.
thanks for any clarification, AD |
The slaware-current is the next release of Slack, and is considered a work in progress. If new to Slack, then I highly suggest the stable trees, slackware-8.1. Download that iso and install it. You will also be able to get more assistance because there are not many running the current, most are running 8.1.

If you're looking to get and make an ISO of slackware-current check out this script at http://trance.rh.rit.edu/slackisomaker/ I took the code from an earlier reply by moses at this link... I've tested it and it works fine for the 5 ISO's i have made.

it tells you how to burn a iso cd from slack current in the slackware current directory. what i was really trying to decide was to go with slack current or slack 8.1. what im trying to find out now is if slack current is considered stable. if it is then i will go with slackware current. if its not then i dont think its worth installing slackware 8.1 right now i think i will wate for the next release which sounds like it might be sometime soon.
thanks, AD |
Well in my personal experience I have been having a lot of trouble with slackware-current and installing/compiling things. Not sure if I burned a bad ISO or the server that I downloaded the current dir from was updating it but I'll reply back after I reinstall all this.

I've been running Slackware -current with no problems since mid-December. I added the Gnome 2 stuff myself (it wasn't in current at that time), though I use Fluxbox and Openbox as wm's.
I use OpenOffice, Mozilla, Apache web-server, SSH, VNC, Grip, XCDRoast, Gnumeric, The Gimp, Gaim, and GKrellM with no problems at all. Slack 8.1 comes with vanilla Gnome 1.4, which is the weakest link, I'd say. If you're a Gnome user, you're better off either using -current, or using 8.1 with Dropline Gnome 2.2 added in (an excellent choice, by the way). ymmv BB |
I have a Slack-current CD coming to me in the mail, hopefully all goes well, and I can join the ranks of the Slackers!
by the way, I'm new here, seems cool so far, maybe this site can join my bookmarks. |
