Question Slackware 8.1 and CUPS

I've got a workstation on my home network that is running Slackware, and a HP Deskjet on a JetDirect setup for TCP/IP. I have tried to get the KDEPrint manager to setup the printer, but obviously LPD doesn't support TCP sockets (without help).

So, I want to enable CUPS on my workstation. rc.M will run CUPS by default if rc.cups exists.... BUT it doesn't. CUPS is part of Slackware 8.1, I believe. So where do I get the rc.cups, or do I need to recomplile CUPS to get it to work under X/KDE ?

Or is there a better way to get my network printer setup for X/KDE ?

Ok, AFAIK cups doesnt come with Slackware install, but is available as an extra from the extras cd (or ftp site).
I personally always used APS filter to setup my local and network printers and had no problems with it.
If it sounds good to you give it atry, to start:
cd /usr/share/apsfilter
./SETUP
Hope that helps

APSFilter works, but...

Got APSfilter to see the printer, and the test page works out fine. Rebooted, and X/KDE 'sees' the printer that I created, but I cannot print to it. There's gotta be a better solution somewhere, or I've missed something

By the way, cups is in the extra/ directory on the Slackware FTP mirrors or on the fourth CD if you bought the CD set.

Talking

After installing apsfilter I had to set the print command on the Mozilla print button to

lpr -Pname given to printer when installed by apsfilter

I am at work stuck on windows but I believe I had to do the same thing in KDE print manager

lpr -P printername <file>
to print <file> with the specified printer. You have to set up this command just about everywhere, lpr -P printername
try it, it should work.

Thanks guys. I figured it out before I came back here. This procedure is necessary for other apps like OpenOffice. Everything is perfect.
