LinuxQuestions.org - slackware-7.1 pcmcia network card problem

well, I have been trying to solve this problem for some time.

i just got an old laptop with slackware-7.1. I am an old redhat user, so I am not too familiar with slackware.

right now i am trying to get a pcmcia ethernet card working. The card is to my knowledge an IBM 10/100 Etherjet 32-bit PC Card Cardbus Adapter (those are pretty much all the words on the ethernet card).

I got pcmcia.tgz, installed it and got it talking to the pcmcia slot. the problem is that it appears that i don't have the right module for the card. i guess the modules that came with pcmcia.tgz (this is the version that comes with slackware-7.1) isn't good enough. Right now, I have cardmgr running and it is not detecting my card. I also tried 'cardctl status' and it does not detect any card.

Any suggestions? is there a package for this kernel (2.2.16, the kernel that comes with 7.1) that has more modules? Or, are they kernel updates for slackware? that is, is there some .tgz of updated kernels (say, 2.2.19 or something). maybe an updated kernel will help, but all i really want is the card to work whatever way i can.

I found another package called pcmcia-cs. the problem is, that i don't have gcc, egcs or any other c compiler so I can't compile the modules. if someone knows of a pcmcia-cs package precompiled with 2.2.16 kernel that would be great.

Some may ask why don't I just get a c compiler and then compile the pcmcia-cs package. The answer: I don't have a working ethernet card! nor do i have a cdrom for the laptop, and egcs is about 3 megs (so it won't fit on floppy).
