and gcc, glibc and kernel-headers got updated so I will continue the head-scratching trying to figure out what was and what fixed it (curiosity will kill me )

Yeah ! I confirm, when I saw a new release announce I couldn't stand waiting to update my system to give a try, and it works pretty well !

Thanks to all the Slackware team !
And of course, thanks to everybody for the support and insights.

I'm curious too, tho it was "just a bug" and I'd rather enjoy the fact that I can go on new devs again .

I'm happy ! I found my "Slack Box for Dev" again.

Ah, good. I can get rid of Ubuntu 9.04 now. I don't dislike Ubuntu, but it's not half as involving and/or interesting as Slack. I am still curious about the cause of the problem, though.

Yes, good news indeed. If this wasn't just "fixed by accident" as can happen sometimes, I'd love to know what the issue was.
