Slackware 14 problems with Kmail
 
Just upgraded to slackware64 v14. Still trying to work out the problems. I got the old email imported to Kmail last night (on a previous thread). But it still won't download my email. There seems to be a problem with my local folders. I see a message in my "accounts" menu saying "no usable storage location configured". However, I just imported my old email so I though that this "storage location" would be configured. I also can't get any sound from Amarok but I can from vlc - I'll put the sound issue in another thread. Any suggestions on the email problem?

Kmail worked fine with slackware64 v13.37. I upgraded to slack v14 and it stopped working. I was able to get my old e-mail imported into the newer version of kmail but it will not download mail from my isp's server (comcast). What other info do you need?

Did you make sure, that all your email identities and accounts are set up correctly for KMail2 and Akonadi?
Do you use IMAP or POP3?

In the case of POP3 do a web search for "KMail2 POP3 spool"!

As you say, you "imported" your email to KMail, I guess, your problem is a failed migration. Unfortunately, migration from Kmail to a completely different mail client turns out to be a lot easier than to KMail2. The problems are related to the fact, that KMail2 relies heavily on Akonadi.

I'd recommend that try to set up KMail2 from scratch. However, one problem with recent KMail versions relying on Akonadi is that configuration files are distributed over several locations, so it may easily have happened that you just forgot to backup and restore one of these files, and that could cause the problems you describe.

To leave your emails intact, but enable a fresh setup, you might try the following (essentially taken from the FAQ):

Log out from KDE and stop Akonadi (e. g. reboot your system).
Log in to another window manager or desktop or console (don't log in to KDE, at this stage!), and try the following:

$ rm -rf ~/.local/akonadi
$ rm -rf ~/.config/akonadi
$ rm -rf .cache
$ rm -rf /tmp/kde*
$ rm -rf /var/tmp/kde*
$ rm -rf ~/.kde/apps/emailidentities
$ rm -rf /tmp/akonadi*

This erases Akonadi setup and caches that might interfere with your attempts to configure KMail2, and should give you the chance for a clean, fresh email setup.

Probably unnecesaary, but just to make sure it works, reboot again.
Log in to KDE fire up KMail2 and start to set up your identities and accounts.

Without more detail it's hard to tell, what actually causes your problem, but the above should either solve it or help to track it down, at least.

IMAP? POP? Maildir? We don't know anything about your set up.

I wouldn't do any of this without backing up first. If your email only exists on your computer (ie not on a IMAP server), you risk losing all your email.

Well, email is stored in ~/.local/share/local-mail by default. Don't ever delete this sub-folder!
Deleting the other folders, as described in my previous post, only erases your KMail2 and Akonadi configuration, which is, I think, what you want. Your email is left untouched. Anyhow, it's never a bad idea to back up things before deleting or changing them!

OK. I deleted the files you listed except I had to modify a couple of paths, e.g. `/.kde/apps/share/emailidentities instead of ~/.kde/apps/emailidentities. I did this from the command line after rebooting. I found that I didn't need to set up kmail again because my mail accounts were still there. It also didn't fix the problem. By the way, I am using pop.

Ok, if your accounts were still there, then there is still one more file to delete. Unfortunately, I don't recall, which one, but I remember, that the hints in the FAQ regarding a failed migration helped me, when I had similar problems.

Your best chance to resolve your problem is, IMHO, to get rid of your current setup. You just have to find out, where it is stored, and that's no longer so easy as it used to be since KMail2 depends on Akonadi.

Maybe someone else knows which file must be deleted in addition to the ones I mentioned, or what else to look for, and where?

Go to KMail -> Settings -> Configuration -> Accounts and see what resources you have. I'd expect a LocalFolders and a POP3 resource. You'll want to check the LocalFolders resource by clicking Modify and confirming that its directory is correct. Then check the POP3 resource and make sure that the Destination Folder has been set correctly.

My guess is that there is a mail folder set incorrectly somewhere and this is why KMail is complaining. You can also check your default identity as there are some folder settings there as well.
