Slackware 14

Hi all Slackware users. Let's subscribe the new version slackware 14 at slackware.com. They need help and is only $50 on slackware DVD 14.
Thanks.

Laodiceans 07-02-2012 09:27 AM

SLackware needs a better way to support itself.

I can't give $50 right now!

There is a big fuzz with raspberry pi and that kind of hardware!

Selling cheap hardware with full working Slackware on it isn't a good idea?

You could buy a T-shirt, or make a donation. I will buy 14.0 when released.

Make a donation to Slackware

Latest Version is 13.37 on DVD

You can pre-order 14, take a look at the store.slackware.com

cikrak 07-02-2012 08:09 PM

It's nice feature if Subscribe for donation exist in Store because Paypal can't set automatically to send donation every month. CMIIW.

shotswell21 07-02-2012 08:12 PM

I bought 2 tshirts and some case badges a few days ago. Nice quality heavy weight T's, I love em only I accidentally ordered one in 2X so it fits like a tent.

ReaperX7 07-02-2012 08:26 PM

I've been meaning to buy a few T-Shirts and maybe the Essentials Book for references.

Laodiceans 07-03-2012 01:54 PM

It's a shame that Red Hat have so much resources. And Slackware, that is a an amazing distro, have so much less.

Sometimes less is more.

storkus 07-03-2012 07:27 PM

Just a quick note to say that Slackware releases around once yearly, so shelling $50 once a year really isn't much, especially considering most of that goes to Pat (and maybe some of the others) rather than to those making the included software. That is, if you consider the true value of all the free software you get even in a typical Slackware DVD, it's an awful lot of money.

Tell that to Microsoft regarding Windows 8.

Yes, in Slackware's case, less is definitely more, and it's better as well. Slackware is created and published by a handful of people who promote a higher quality of standards rather than just pushing stuff out, waiting to see what happens, and then repeating it over and over again regardless of what the community says to them.

j0s3pha 07-05-2012 12:21 PM

Having been a long time Slackware user and subscription holder. The price of the subscription to help ensure Pat and the team can continue is a very small price to pay for the product quality they consistently deliver.

I also am a fan of their T-Shirts too and own several!

Just my .02 worth.... :)

slackass 07-05-2012 12:57 PM

Sure wish they'd carry big an tall t-shirts.
Nothing they have fits me. :-(

Thanks.

Pre-ordered now.
Partly because I made my first backup of 13.0, after trashing xorg.conf while trying to make my marble trackball scroll better.

Laodiceans 07-06-2012 09:19 PM

I made a small donation!
Maybe a service with newsletters or something like a Slackware Magazine by a $5-$15 would be nice.
Like I said I can't give the $50 now.
I tried to buy a t-shirt but the shipping was more expensive than the t-shirt itself :P

To me the ideal is a small price but paid more often and get a service with that with no shipping costs :D

chess 07-07-2012 12:33 AM

The Slackware DVD subscription is $39.95, not $50, and the CD subscription is only $32.99. Considering that Pat releases only about once a year, it's a small price to pay. I've been a subscriber for a /long/ time and highly recommend it as a great way to support the project.

I also pre-ordered Slack14.
A month ago (the bank transaction date is June the 11, 2012) I ordered
some T-shirts per Air mail, but nothing has still arrived. Currently I am in Germany.
Does it usually take so long for the delivery? I already wrote an email to info@store.slackware.com
but got no reply so far.

sycamorex 07-07-2012 03:27 AM

Be patient. It usually takes quite a long time. Last year I ordered some t-shirts to be shipped to UK and iirc it took 2 months.

hitest 07-07-2012 07:51 AM

Just purchased the DVD subscription for 14.0. :)

I agree with you. For me it's better the shipping cost donated :)

Sustainable : small donation, more often, more people,...

Laodiceans 07-08-2012 11:57 PM

And I even use DVDs anymore! I have everything in pen-disks!

I agree:

That's why it's called a donation, not sales. But hey, in fact, there's already a great bonus with that:
Satisfaction that you've helped a good cause:)

Its really a frightening reality that this simple yet outstanding distribution, which has been around forever, is literally only here today because of the efforts of a few dedicated people. I'm not too fond of Slackware on the desktop but as a server distribution I think its the greatest thing since sliced bread.

jostber 07-09-2012 12:33 PM

I subscribe to the Slackware DVD and made a donation as well yesterday. :)

Laodiceans 07-09-2012 06:04 PM

My point was that with increase of Linux popularity. More people will use Linux and trying different distros.
Get that people in Slackware is a good deal. With more users come more money!

Some people didn't even know Slackware! And others think that is already dead...

"A distro that exists since the beginning of Linux???"
It's hard to imagine!

And the way this distro works...
The great comments on scripts...
I luv Slackware!

Thats the strong one isnt it?

or am I thinking about the fizzy one guinness make?

Jeebizz 07-10-2012 08:15 AM

There is a fizzy Guinness? I'd like to see that, because I tried Guinness and it wasn't great at all. Looks good, but it is flat, literally like very little carbonation, and it just didn't taste all that great. *shrug*

Amen brother. I need the 4XLT, as a 4XL is simply too short.

solarfields 07-10-2012 01:14 PM

Guiness is great

It's supposed to be flat (it's low on carbon dioxide), similarly to Ales.

Send him this one to appreciate his great works :)

Small donation, great beer, more often... more fun :D

ReaperX7 07-10-2012 09:00 PM

I often wonder if Patrick has ever considered brewing up a batch of his beer and sending subscribers a limited time free bottle?

If you do things right, people won't think you've done anything at all.

I once heard an Irishman say:

Quote:

"Guinness. Its like angels playing their harps...ON YOUR TONGUE!"

I used to drink the normal Guinness, but not so much any more, I've gone back to lager.

Tonight Im finishing off my mothers brandy.

dxtrpn 07-12-2012 08:34 PM

I pre-ordered it. Now I just want to know when I'll receive it! Also, I'm drinking Guinness Extra Stout.

NightSky 07-12-2012 11:36 PM

Slackware project is short staffed and really busy putting together a free rock solid distro. I would volunteer to fill orders for The Slackware Store but I too far away. Wish I could donate. I am going to get a mouse pad, put slackware book and cds on wishlist. lol When does the slackware14 come out?

Hey Jabba the Hut...they carry triple XL and I'm fairly certain that's big enough to wrap around an elephant two or three times :)
