Slackware 14.0 + DHCP

Hello,

May I ask You for help... I have installed Slack 14 on Proliant server...
Also this server will be dedicated for DHCP, Apache and others. But for configuration I have connected this machine to other Slackware with working DHCP server.

New server got IP address from DHCP, but "ifconfig" shows only IPv6.
What Should I do to see IPv4 addrss in summary of "ifconfig " command.

Best Regards
michal

It shows up on my machine with no effort.

Could you post the output that you do get when you run the command?

try ifconfig -a

also, posting your /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf, where the configuration for your network interfaces resides, could help to understand what's happening.

Hello,

Thanks for reply...

My config file:

USE_DHCP[1]=""
DHCP_HOSTNAME[1]=""

# Config information for eth2:

# Config information for eth3:

you forgot the output from "ifconfig -a"

which interface is connected to the same network of the dhcp server? eth0?

Hello,

today I ask my colleague to prepare screen shot or some photo... I will be at place in next 3 hours.
Please look at photo. Also I asked him to remove static IP from ETH1 and connect link from ETH0 to ETH1.
Maybe there was a problem with hardware... But the same situation... The difference is in the IP address that was assigned.

But I forgot to tell You, I cannot ping any address. I have checked using laptop with Ubuntu (KDE) and everything is OK. I can ping hosts in local network and hosts in Internet. So the network is OK... There is a problem with Slack or hardware...

from the photo, seems to me that the cable is connected to eth0 and packets are sent and received, so the guess I can do is that the network to which is connected doesn't have a working dhcp server or there's something wrong with the switch/cable, but if you have connected the laptop to the same cable connected to eth0 and it works you can leave this guess out.

the ipv6 address is the one of the network card, is not assigned by any dhcp server.

try to specify a static ip address for the network interface (a gateway too and a nameserver entry in /etc/resolv.conf) and see how it goes, this also because it doesn't make much sense to me to have a server with an interface configured with dhcp (if you at least don't do a reservation first on the dhcp server).

if it doesn't work this way too, I think your guess that eth0 can have some hardware problems can be possible too.
but, notice that in the photo no address is assigned even to eth1, also if you have specified it manually in the configuration you posted, so if you are using the same configuration, you could also probably have problems with your installation.

hello,

I have connected to DHCP only to prepare DHCP, Aapache server and others...
After configuration I will establish IP deliverd from ISP. At this moment I'm waiting for IP form ISP.

ok, I understand.

please check all of the above, and specify please if you are using a full installation (the only one supported) or you have installed a selected subset of packages (I can't help much in this case).

Hello,

Many thanks for help...
I found problem... my switch and network card in Proliant 580 G2.
On Netgear I had 100Mb/s Full Duplex, but NIC works fine only with 100Mb/s half duplex.
Now everything is working fine... but I've tried to use Cisco 3750 and on Cisco cannot establish connection with half duplex, only full duplex working fine.

michal
