Slackware 13 with Xorg, Intel video card, and vesa driver
Hi there!
First of all, sorry if my english is kinda bad written... it's not my native language
Here goes the problem: I have a Amilo M7400 notebook with an Intel 82852/82855 GME video card, and X is a bit uncompatible with it.
I've tried using the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but when i start Xserver, it hangs hard in a blank screen. I can't open a new terminal and control+alt+backspace won't work.
what can i do? is there a log file for X which details the initialization of it?
Go to the /var/log and you'll find a file like Xorg.0.log. In here you should be able to find errors and warnings by searching for EE and WW in the file.
Feel free to post your log and xorg.conf files for us to take a look at.
i nearly forgot! using Intel driver, X starts, but desktop is kinda screwed (the colors in the menu bar from the bottom are mixed) and it (the desktop) eventually hangs. But i can force the Xserver shutdown, or open a terminal.
I just started X with vesa, and still no hard-hanging. Almost the same as with Intel driver, but doesn't get to desktop. Only blank screen with the mouse cursor.
Log(1).txt is with the intel driver and Log(2).txt is the one with vesa.
They seem to be getting close to a fix, but either way, you may end up having to use either the older legacy intel driver or the vesa driver.
Also, if I'm reading log(2) correctly, it seems like it loaded the intel driver, not the vesa driver.
Post your xorg.conf file.
hmmm so it's a bug?
Well, nevermind. I needed my notebook with some OS running, so i downloaded Slackware 12.2, installed it, and i have absolutely no problems with X. I have another problem, but is with the wireless adapter, so i'm going to search for a thread with info of it or create a new one.

Vesa driver
You can still try the "vesa" driver and as suggested the legacy driver...
its easy to try the "vesa" driver just put in a terminal...
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf then scroll down to the device section and change the driver to "vesa" then write it out with ctrl O then its ctrl X and finally startx. worth a try !

Thank you very much for your help!
Should i mark this thread as solved?
Glad you got it working.
As for marking the thread solved, it's up to you. I'm waiting until there's a fix to this bug til I mark a thread I started some time ago as solved.
