Slackware 13 - Undefined Video Mode

Hi,

I've already searched the forum but I've not found a definitive answer to this so far.

I've done a totally new install of Slackware 13 64 bit on a brand new PC (Dual core AMD Athlon, nVidia MCP78S chipset, 3GB Ram, SATA).

It's still booting from the huge kernel at the moment.

When I first installed Slack, the system would boot with the framebuffer console and two tuz graphics in the corner.

This pc has an on board nVidia Geoforce 8200 gmpu so I downloaded and installed the nVidia driver (185.18.36) from Slackbuilds.

Now when I boot I get the message:

Undefined Video Mode Number: 305.

I can get rid of this by changing lilo.conf to vga = normal.

Everything else is working fine, xorg is working with the new nVidia driver but it would be nice to have the framebuffer console working again.

Has anyone else had the same issue?

Thanks
Steve

Hello,

Maybe you can try to see which video modes are available by typing in vga=ask. Refer to lilo.conf man pages (this extract was gleaned from the internet so I'm not sure if it's still valid because I'm not on my Slackware machine at the moment):

Quote:
vga=mode
This specifies the VGA text mode that should be selected when booting. The following values are recognized (case is ignored):

normal: select normal 80x25 text mode.

extended (or ext): select 80x50 text mode.

ask: stop and ask for user input (at boot time).

<number>: use the corresponding text mode. A list of available modes can be obtained by booting with vga=ask and pressing [Enter].
Also this thread lists some possible values : Lilo vga modes?

I have the same issue, but I am using an ATI card and it says the video mode that's unrecognizable is 316. I can press enter, choose whatever I want, which is 366(1280x1024) and it boots.

I've tried putting 366 in the lilo.conf file as vga=366 but that doesn't work. It doesn't matter what I seem to enter, it doesn't work.

Once it boots I think it says it's 160x50 for a text mode, but I don't see that option anywhere.

I had the same issue a while ago with my -current install. After reinstalling my Nvidia driver and lilo it went away....still not sure what the original cause was.
