Okay, so for an experiment I got a 60GB OCZ Agility SSD, my system has increased in bootup and loading of programs a ton from my previous 150GB 10,000RPM hard drive. Anyhow, curious, for some reason I couldn't get the system to bootup from the SSD until I finaly (after 5 installs) went ahead and installed KDE, I don't have to use KDE but I had to actualy install the packages from it for it to work. Without the KDE packages it would load the USB devices than after than it would just stop.
Is there any specific things from KDE I would need? I would actually like to delete KDE but don't want to say, disable my system by doing so.
[edit] and yes, I user Windowmaker and really an SSD is WAY overkill, but hey, I was curious lol
\[...\] for some reason I couldn't get the system to bootup from the SSD until I finaly (after 5 installs) went ahead and installed KDE,
by not booting up, you mean from bios post, or you couldn't get to a complete X session?
i'm guessing you mean init 4, with a _dm desktop manager to let you login. can you elaborate more? i'm sure kde ultimately doesn't relate except for that 'kdebase-workspace' contains kdm, other than that you should default back to /usr/bin/xdm from the 'xdm' package.
It would get through POST just fine, the system would start to load, where it goes through everything before it gets to the login, I don't really know the name, it's where Linux lists everything it's loading, shows warnings etc before the system is ready to login. It shows it loading up the USB devices and than after that it just stops booting.

i still need a bit more info to be able to help you.
what runlevel are you booting to? 1,3,4?
"shows warnings"? what are the warnings?
you said it gets to the loading of usb devices, are you using an initrd or not? this sounds like it would be early on in the boot process.
how much are you cherry picking during the installation? if you are deselecting packages (like the kde suite), which ones and why?
Okay, sorry for not specifying, it's not showing any warnings, it's at the screen where they would come up. I really don't know what it's bringing up exactly since I managed to get it installed, I just deselect the whole KDE package during installation normally. And runlevel 3. There's no actual warnings, I just don't know how to describe what screen it is.
The package is simply the "KDE QT and the KDE desktop environment for X"
hmm nothing that is in KDE is actually (as far as I know) actively used during bootup. Even KDM, in case you are booting up in runlevel 4 is passed by if it is not installed (have a look at /etc/rc.d/rc.4).
I have booted up countless installations without KDE and without X, XAP, KDE{,I} installed.
To be honest, I would like to see the answers of vbatts questions, as well as preferably some formatted output
Yeah it stumps me too honestly, but no, it *does not* work to bootup from an SSD until I installed Slackware with KDE, I've tried everything but the normal way I install Slackware (without KDE) just will not work on the SSD, no idea why, but I tried everything I could think of. Oh and I am 100% totally sure I was not set to run at anything other than run level 3.
Initird? Not sure, I guess it's whatever the basic install with basic options, is set too :s the only things I ever change in the install when installing my Slackware is simply Lilo and that one KDE group I mentioned, and lilo was definitely working correctly, but I also tried it with that done in simple mode.
And as for warnings, once again, I just don't know how to describe the screen, there were no actual warnings.
