Slackware 13.37 x64 & Windows 7 x64 Dual Boot Issues
I tried installing Slackware 13.37 x64 and am getting errors. I suspect the relate to Windows 7 Pro x64 since I can due the dual boot bit with Vista Ultimate x64 without problems & Server 2008r2 x64 without errors. It is that or LILO problems.
I installed Slackware on a separate hard drive. Installs, creates LILO without issues and then on the first and all other boots all I get is L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99. Research says it's a LILO error. So....
I clean up the MBR for the Windows 7 Partition, shutdown, unplug the other drives, and reinstall Slackware. Works great. Boot to Prompt, Log in, Startx brings up KDE without any issues so I shut down, plug in the drives and on first boot I get Kernel Panics related to it not being able to find INIT(process 1. Unplugging the drives doesn't help either at this point.
When you install Slackware make sure you toggle the BOOT setting in cfdisk to target the Linux partition rather than the NTFS Windows partition.
Use the simple LILO setup and have it target the MBR to write to, and it will work. I currently use this setup without issues.
I have done that already a couple of times & it still hasn't work.
The way I dual boot win7_64 pro & Slack64 is:
Install 32bit Grub
I install Grub to separate boot partition but you can install to root if you wish.
Then select the MBR option.
If you run into trouble the Super Grub Disk can fix it for you.
Might be better if you get and burn Super Grub Disk 1st just in case.
It can also fix win MBR if you bork it.
1. Boot with the SlackDVD
2. Mount your Slack partition
e.g. mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
2. chroot in your slack root partition
3. # liloconfig
4. # lilo -v
