Hi All,

I'm new to slackware, but not overly new to linux in general (I switched to Ubuntu on my work laptop permanently), but I'm having issues getting the system to a state that I require.

For this post, I'm looking at upgrading Firefox. With the 13.37, it comes with FF4, but I w.ould like to have 9 or 10.

I'm trying to upgrade to FF 10. I've downloaded the files from: ftp://slackware.org.uk/salix/x86_64/13.37/salix/xap/ and tried the "doinst.sh" file that was included with it and it extracted a few extra files, but didn't install the program like I wanted. When I run "firefox" from that directory, just says repeatedly and I don't know what to do.

I've downloaded some other files from slackbuilds.org and another site or two but kept running into the same issue; if the files are correct, I don't know what to properly do with them.

Can someone point me in the right direction step by step to upgrade firefox?

That should be all.

An even more practical way to keep all your system up-to-date is to run slackpkg. Firefox 10 is already in 13.37

If I choose to go the slackpkg route, do I have to do the whole everytime?

Also, I know this may be a preference thing, but which would be better? Manually removing and reinstalling my packages, or just using slackpkg? I switched to slackware because I want to try and learn as much as possible, but just in finding this info about firefox, I've spent two days on it before I had to post. That would be quite annoying if it was something I needed quick. But the slackpkg route seems reminiscent of ubuntu and not really knowing anything about the system... Any insight would be welcomed.

It requires some times to be familiar with Slackware, you take a wrong route by extracting the slackware package, it is meant to be installed with the installpkg command...

As for slackpkg, I think it is automated script that looks for the changelog:
http://www.slackware.com/changelog/

and download the updated packages accordingly

You can perfectly do it manually

if you do following in the same version all you will get is security fixes and the occasional new package. You can select which packages to upgrade/install or just do slackpkg upgrade firefox if that is all you want
# slackpkg update
# slackpkg install-new
# slackpkg upgrade-all
# slackpkg clean-system

Thanks for the info, and thanks for the help. I've tried the slackpkg route and it's currently downloading/installing the variously packages on my system. Figured I would just updated everything (about 25 packages + Firefox). I still have a number of other things to install and get working, so I'll be doing the manual install for them at least to get them in the system and try and learn from that for the time being.
