Don't fret over messing up the torrents for others.

Bittorrent is pretty forgiving and due to it's distributed nature (assuming there are enough seeders) no-one will notice if one person drops a connection.

Each file is sort of sliced into chunks and random chunks are taken from other peers and then made available to others who will grab random chunks and on it goes....

I've experienced torrent to be forgiving (safe) of that. Torrent just keeps on, uses what *is* available in the way of seed(s).

I'd used the sligdo and I've been seeding both the 32 bit and the 64 bit DVD's for 20 hours now.

One gigabyte of each uploaded so far. Two gigs total upload at this time. And going/continueing -- still seeding -- for days and days yet to come.

My upload on each of the two torrents runs at 20 KB/s (at&t dsl internet).

gkrellm shows 35 to 55 or so KB/s total upload speed. (bounces up and down, continuously back and forth between the 35 to 55).

I think my dsl provider nowadays throttles torrent upload -- years ago it used to upload at a significantly higher rate than it does these days.

Wow.. I was just going to start installing Slackware V13.1 and I noticed that the slack Wikipedia article stated that a new stable release came out yesterday! Awesome... gonna seed this one (x86 DVD) for months!

Thanks for that information. I had an idea bittorent was pretty much fault tolerant in this area as it would have to be in reality. I'm seeding now and have been for some time - my machine is on 24/7 so I'll just leave it running and reset my router whenever it coughs up.
I'm getting between 25 and 60KB/s so we're about the same there. I think I'll look into the Bittorrent protocol in some detail as it's rather interesting how it works. I know my ISP, Virgin Media, is reputed to throttle torrents whenever it spots them. They also impose stupid throttling measures on any traffic over certain timed limits which has hit me many times.

So far I'm seeding with around 40kbps ~ 60 kbps and will continue to do so for some time. Will spend some money in Slacware store or donate within a couple of weeks after the bills are paid. :)
BTW, already installed! Excellent work, nice graphics (fonts, KDE) and as always, everything worked seamlessly out of the box!

Yeah me too. My box is always on but i have a 16MBit/1Mbit DSL, so i can only give 80-100KB/sec.

Edit: I put the torrents in my university server, so i can also give 2MB/sec from that box.

I didn't download the Slackware64 13.37 DVD via Bittorrent (I got it from AlienBob's link), but is there a way I could fake Ktorrent or something into thinking that I did so I could seed it anyway?

Obviously I had to trick Vuze into seeding the iso, even tho it didn't download it via torrent. So I used dd to generate an iso from the disk to be the exact size that the iso should be 'bs=1024 count=4508080'. I started to download the iso, I stopped it, replaced the iso with the full one, restarted, got it to verify it, then it worked, it's seeding.

All you need is a match (to the official torrent .iso file).

If you were to torrent what you have, at first, it will do a verification.

And, if it comes up as a match, then seeding, upload will begin shortly. If, however, it comes up as not a match, then, downloading (not seeding) will begin and continue until yours becomes a match and then seeding will begin.

Suggest, if you try this, do so with a copy, not your original .iso.

If too much downloading happens, a way usually exists to cancel/terminate.

I am presuming you have a local copy from Alien Bob's mirror-slackware-current.sh script of the tree, as I do, if so this is what I did to seed an iso. See my previous posts and responses for more information. If you merely want to add an existing CD/DVD image to the torrents then you may skip the sligdo.sh iso creation bits in the following.

Basically I hold complete trees for Slackware 13.37 and Slackware64 13.37 via AlienBob's script mirror-slackware-current.sh. I then downloaded sligdo.sh, jigdo-file, slackware64-13.37-install-dvd.jigdo and slackware64-13.37-install-dvd.template and put then all in a newly created directory named for example /this/is/my/sligdo/directory - (with a lot of space available - about 5G). I then had to rename my Slackware64-current tree directory to Slackware64-13.37 which sligdo.sh seems to look for and ran "./sligdo.sh /this/is/my/base/slackware/tree" - obviously that is an illustrative directory in which my newly renamed Slackware64-13.37 directory lives. This then created an iso under my sligdo.sh directory named slackware64-13.37-iso/slackware-13.37-install-dvd.iso. I then downloaded the torrent file for slackware64-13.37 and opened it in Ktorrent - choosing to save the downloaded files in /this/is/my/sligdo/directory - (the one where I had saved sligdo.sh and under which slackware64-13.37-iso directory is created. Ktorrent finds the existing iso in that directory and runs a check through it then downloads any missing files from the torrent. It then seeds the iso you have created.

Phew - that is very much hard work and a total PITA to do! I think there should be tools to do all this automatically as I guess there are a lot of folks like myself that have up to date complete trees of the release and want to contribute to the torrents. At first it seemed the only way easy way of doing this was to first download the entire torrent of the image and then leave it seeding for others. Obviously a stupid idea as I have a local copy of the trees already.

If, however, you already have a suitable DVD/CD image and just wish to add to the torrent then just follow as above and miss out the sligdo.sh creation bits.

Apologies as this is all very complicated and wordy but I hope you get the idea.
