Slackware 13.37 Broadcom 4311
Afternoon guys i have a dell inspiron with the broadcom 4311 wireless card.
From a clean install i followed
Code:
2 tar xjf b43-fwcutter-015.tar.bz2
3 cd b43-fwcutter-015
4 make
5 sudo make install
6 cd ..
and
Code:
1 export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware"
2 wget http://www.lwfinger.com/b43-firmware/broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2
3 tar xjf broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2
4 sudo b43-fwcutter -w "$FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR" broadcom-wl-5.100.138/linux/wl_apsta.o

after doing the above wlan0 is visible and i can scan for access points but it always says cannot find any.

Have the same chip on HP Compaq 6720s. Slackware64 13.37. No errors/panics.
Tried to understand different Linux/Slackware wireless HOWTO's - unsuccessfully, abandoned. Activated wicd. It doesn't detected any networks. Examined /var/log/syslog - found complains about absent firmware. Remembered one of HOWTO and installed fwcutter (013) from slackbuilds.org, but I didn't used it at all(don't know how) - removed. Then I have installed from slackbuilds.org a bunch of firmwares (b43-firmware package) and it begun to work. Tried to configure network using wicd - successfully. Removed wicd and filled configuration in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf - still works.
I see you have loaded module called b44(for wired ethernet controller I think). I have found on ubuntoforums similar problem(even with similar notebook model - dell inspirion). It seems b43 and b44 are conflicting. They recommend to not to use them both. Try to unload+blacklist one and load other, and vice versa.

b43 .

At last
I got my laptop to work with b43, but when I replaced antiX with custom debian, I could see b43 light, but no networks were visible and I couldn't connect to my hidden network. I finally found this thread. The new firmware works!
