Slackware 13.37, accidentaly removed dolphin

Hi.

I would like to ask You for help. I've recently tried to solve few problems with errors after upgrading KDE to 4.7.2, and now i don't have problems with KDE Deamons but in fact, now i can't launch Dolphin (file manager) and i don't know why and what happened.

There is no icon in K>programs. When i click on it, nothing happens. I thing that it was accidentaly removed, but i don't know how it could happened.

Can you help me? I hate konqueror. I don't know how to install it, or bring it back. I tried to search slackware dvd but i didn't found it. Below there is screen:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/202/dolphin1o.jpg/

(it is in Polish. First is the konqueror - i hate it - second is "system settings" and third is broken Dolphin - called here "Menadżer Plików", in english it would be something like files manager)

I click on it, nothing happens. Also there is no dolphin in K-programs-tools, K-programs-system.

I forgot to mention one thing. I tried to add "plasmoid - icon" to a panel from K, and in dolphin case, where there is no icon, when i want to open dolphin from panel i have error like this:

"kdeinit could not launch "dolphin-icon". Could not find dolphin-icon executable".

the easiest way is to remove your .kde in your home directory
it will recreate a default configuration for KDE

That's the funniest thing. I did it two times in a row. The same thing happens.

Maybe i'm missing some package that name i don't know.

What happens if you run dolphin from a terminal window?

Also the screen shot you have is of the favorites screen, you don't add icons to this screen unless they are in one of the other screens.

In English dolphin should be under :-
Applications -> System

EDIT:
dolphin is a part of kdebase, it does not have it's own separate package even in the modular KDE.

EDIT2:
ldd output from Eric's KDE 4.7.2 dolphin

It runs like this:

Code:
firekage@darkstar:~$ dolphin
dolphin(3728) KSambaSharePrivate::testparmParamValue: We got some errors while running testparm "Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf
WARNING: No path in service storage - making it unavailable!

And i see Dolphin window pop up.

No, no. I don't want to add icon here. From here you can add icon for a taskbar panel - place where your clock is, sound, icon with i letter. When i add it for this panel, than dolphin icon is not "drawer" but white sheet, and when i want to start it i have "kdeinic could not lanuch dolphin-icon, could not find dolphin-icon executable".

The taskbar is special when it comes to dolphin.

On mine there is an icon there only when dolphin is not running, as soon as dolphin starts whether from the icon or some other way the icon will disappear.

Maybe you;re talking about launcher? When something is not active, switched off the icon stays at taskbar, when is active it dissaperars.

But i don;t have problem with it, i cant start dolphin from KDE - it's not here. There is only blank entry for it - on my screen it's shown.

A little update - we can add icon for the main window of K. Window where is only three things: konqueror, system settings, Dolphin. Because my Dolphin doesen't work from K, only from terminal, i tried to add Thunar file manager - it works. It's in main window of K with konqueror, system settings and broken Dolphin.

Screen:

BTW - i've reinstalled again all KDE from Eric repo, and as you can see above, problem with Dolphin still exists.

I did it, doesen't help. In my opinion running command
Quote:
upgrade --reinstall --install-new xxx
works only for packages that we have, and packages that works. If we don't have needed packages than this command wont install it. In fact it replaces existing only packages.

If my Dolphin won't work, i won't find solution than i will use Thunar - it's faster, much faster.

--reinstall --install-new will install a new one (if it doesn't exist) and it will reinstall existing package, so basically that's the correct command

Hi, it's me again.

I still haven't found answer for my problem. I checked few things and:

-dolphin works troukh KDE (K) when i'm logged as a root
-dolphin doesen't work trough KDE (K) when i'm logged as a user, works only trough console [i think that it came up after switching to a compiz (i wanted to check it, after checking i switched for kwin again)]

I checked:

usr/share/applications/kde4/dolphin.desktop
/home/firekage/.local/share/applications/kde4/dolphin.desktop

and dolphin.desktop in user/share and /home/firekage are files with execute permission (green colour).

dolphin.desktop as user looks like it:

Code:
firekage@darkstar:~/.local/share/applications/kde4$ cat dolphin.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Comment[pl]=
Comment=
Exec=dolphin%i -caption "%c" %u

Type=Application
X-DBUS-ServiceName=
X-DBUS-StartupType=
X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false
X-KDE-Username=

and dolphin.desktop from root looks like it:

all of the dolphin.desktop (icon) are with this parameter:

Code:
:
dolphin %i -caption "%c" %u
Can you help me? I don't know why it works only trough console when logged as a user (when logged as a user after launching dolphin nothing happens, and short after it there is message like this:

Code:
"kde init nie może uruchomić 'dolphin-icon',; could not find 'dolphin-icon' executable"
(in english it is written: kde init could not run 'dolphin-icon',; could not find 'dolphin-icon' executable"[/code]
, and works fine when logged as a root. I don't want to delete my profile or kde settings (i don't want to install all of the software and so on).

Is there a way to fix it? If you need something from terminal, and so on, than i will paste it.

Right click on the dolphin icon, go to property, next go to application, under "command" change "dolphin %i -caption "%c" %u to" "/usr/bin/dolphin" this should work.

If that doesn't work, right click on desktop "create new" next "link to application" next to "application" then at command "/usr/bin/dolphin".

If you want it to be root at opening, the command for the icon is, "kdesu /usr/bin/dolphin" Then you will have to log in as root everytime.

Thank you very much! It works!

Now i can sleep at peace

BTW - do you know why with "dolphin %i -caption "%c" %u to" it didn't work? This command is even in root account, where it works fine.

I don't know how that got there but there is no path for it to find dolphin. Root might have a built in path so it knows where it is located but I don't know for sure. Glad you got it going!
