I have tried both ways. it unpacks and everything but then after that it says permission denied. i am wondering if it is because i have installed 64 bit of slackware
I installed Slackware 14 current 64 bit. and downloaded the ati driver from site for 64 bit. and i passed nomodeset to lilo and booted in completed the initial configuration. i installed the driver now using sh ./ati*.run . it installed perfectly. i started the X went in tried amdcccle as root it fails to start the catalyst center. says some issues that the driver might not have been installed properly. I thought it might be because of the nomodeset i passed to the kernel at start up. So i tried rebooting . And I am still having the same issue the screen goes blank after initial boot.... And I believe Slackware current has a newer kernel 3.2 .
Any help will be really apppreciated guys.. Waiting for your reply
Are you sure you got the right driver? If I'm not mistaken the most current version of radeon drivers start with amd*.run not ati*.run and only the latest driver will work the version of Xorg that Slackware 14 uses.
i added blacklist radeon as per man modprobe in blacklist.conf and uninstalled the driver using pkg tool. rebooted without nomodeset i am not able to boot in same after initial scrolling the screen goes blank. then i tried to re install with nomodset. same issue still. i thought at lease with the new kernel the issue might have been solved . but i am really fed up with ati now.....
Are you running Slackware64-current, and if so, have you been keeping up with the updates?

I installed Slackware 14 current 64 bit
Slackware 14 isn't official yet and has been in a state of transtition for the past few months. Slackware64-14 is still Slackware64-current. If you haven't been keeping up with the updates that could be the problem.

i have downloaded it from distrowatch. the RC4.. and my laptop is a year and half old . I think the fix or drivers should be out by now. i am facing the same issue with other distributions only one which went through the whole and booted into desktop are slackware and pclinuxos. but pclinux os also after installing the driver gave up....
i am really in a crisis with my laptop . tried almost all good sistributions like ubuntu debian linux mint knoppix puppy slackware pclinuxos with every single one except slack and pclos i am not able to complete the bootitself let alone to find a work around the issue....
I am no expert but this feels like tiresome ....

Have you ran slackpkg update since you installed Slackware 14? If not then do the following if you have a decent internet connection.
edit /etc/slackpkg/mirrors and uncomment one of the slackware64-current entries
edit /etc/slackpkg/blacklist and comment out aaa* and the kernel entries if they are not commented out with the # sign.
edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and remove radeon or comment it out with the # sign
uninstall the amd driver if it is already installed then reboot, may have to use the nomodeset option.
as root run
Quote:
slackpkg update
Quote:
slackpkg install-new
Quote:
slackpkg upgrade-all
If asked about new config files, Overwrite since this is still a new install
rerun lilo if asked to do so
Quote:
lilo
reboot try it without the nomodeset option first.
This should get you current on updates. Then we will start again with getting your graphics card working.
If you run into problems while updating just let us know, It won't be the first time problems cropped up while updating Slackware64-current.
