slackware 13.1, kernel 2.6.33.4, wireless adapter Atheros (AR9285)

hi all!

sorry for bad english )

i have some problem with AR9285 at slackware 13.1 (2.6.33.4): wireless network unstable : packet drops about 5-7%.
signal strengh - over 90%.
q-ty of wireless client - 1.

but opensuse 11.4 (2.6.37.1) at this hardware works good : 0% packet loss.

another wireless adapter at slackware works good too (i tested Linksys compact wireless-G USB adapter).

seems to be a problem at Atheros driver.

compiling ath9k from wireless-compat ( http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Dr...t_ath9k_driver ) does not help : wlan0 dissapear.

----

# lspci
02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

using wicd as network manager.

also trying an trivial wpa_supplicant connection method (network WPA2 protected).

is any ideas ?

Since 2.6.37 works, why not try it?

i'd like and try (once)
but installed package with 2.6.37 (from -current) crash system at boot seq.

compiling 2.6.37 from source package give me no sound, no usb, etc.
however, modules are present (modprobe -l show many right modules)

*
i'm slackware user from 1999
and compiling kernel - usual thing for me :)
but this case are confusing me

guanx 04-27-2011 07:51 AM

Crash on boot? Most probably a simple panic (forgot initrd). Do you remember the error messages?

no, i'm never use initrd : always include fs/driver/etc directly into kernel

crash was in module, name which i can't remember (now)
especially, i'll try to replace kernel one more time and record everything.

you cannot install a package from current to stable (diff gcc version)
easy is to upgrade Slackware from 13.1 to -current

did you know easy method for upgrading ?
10x

Slackpkg can be used to upgrade the whole distribution.
The usual way is to do:

# slackpkg update
# slackpkg install-new
# slackpkg upgrade-all
# slackpkg clean-system
from man slackpkg
but first you need to select a new mirror(for -current) from /etc/slackpkg/mirrors

welcome.
i forgot to say ,you must go to /etc/slackpkg/blacklist and comment the line with aaa_elflib (put # before)
you need this for proper upgrade

This is one of the known regressions in 2.6.38.x compared with 2.6.37.x and earlier:

http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.lin....general/68675

And here (when the site comes back up) is a list of regressions that started with 2.6.38, many of which are still problems with no solution in the kernel yet:

http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.lin....general/68675

2.6.37.6 is dead. Long live 2.6.37.6. ;)

wow! i can't believe! Patrick personally! i'm happy to "see" you! :)

so, about problem...
upgrading slackware thru slackpkg did not help : system does not boot 'cos module error. again.
i'll try to install "clean" 13.37, which are released last days and test one more time.

but! i have notice one strange thing : when i make a voice call (with Ekiga, SIP), packet drops are dissapear!
like "at active state" adapter work as expected!
so, i think that problem may be in some adapter "standby" state (?) or kernel handling ath9k driver (?)

and one more time, opensuse 11.4 (2.6.37.1-desktop) don't have this problem.

soon i'll report here news about my next tries

thanks!

out-of-box 13.37

so, i've install brand new 13.37
and i'm very disappointed. :(

btw, hardware is Lenovo C200 monoblock

1) system won't boot while hdd is on AHCI mode. it's load only with IDE-compatible mode.
while AHCI mode system crash with kernel messages about ahci...

2) during boot i've seen very frequent message about "hda-intel spurious response 0x0:0x0, last cmd=0x0f0000"
and don't need to say that there are no sound. alsamixer shown only onboard USB 2.0 UVC Camera.

3) there are no one network interfaces. only loopback.
but, for example, module for wireless adapter seems to be loaded :
# lsmod | grep ath
ath9k 73302 0
mac80211 181473 1 ath9k
ath9k_common 1497 1 ath9k
...

# lsmod | grep e100
e100 28071 0

# lspci
...
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82552 10/100 Network Connections (rev 02)
02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

i need help
;)
