Slackware 13.1 - Internet Connection Problems

Hi guys,

It's from the last 2 days that i'm trying to setup internet connection in Slackware 13.1. I've tried following a lot of forum topics, tuts etc. but i'm unable to make it work.

I'm using a router connected to my ethernet port and it's also getting detected by slackware. I'm able to ping my gateway (192.168.1.1) and some other sites too, but from any webbrowser, i'm unable to visit any of those sites. I can see only the favicon and the page title in the webbrowser.
I've assigned static ip address in netconfig and given this values:
  • IP Address: 192.168.1.2
  • Nameserver: 8.8.8.8

For example:
If i go to google.com from firefox, i get the textbox and the two buttons, but no google logo and i'm unable to search. In other sites, the page is just blank.

Currently the content of /etc/rc.conf is this:
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4
BTW i'm not using DHCP, also i've a realtek network card.
I'm unable to troubleshoot this problem, and i hope to get some help from you all.
Thanks!

It's a weird issue...if you can ping outside websites and get a response, the only thing *I* can suggest is to try blacklisting the ipv6 module...but it would be weird for firefox to show part of a website like that. Have you tried other browsers? It is possible that your firefox install is corrupt...

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

I'm not sure if it's just a typo but '/etc/resolv.conf' would be the file to place your DNS nameserver(s) not '/etc/rc.conf'.

Who is your ISP? Google? You are using Google's third level DNS. What IP does your ISP provide?

:hattip:

I had a customer with a bad NIC the other day that did the same thing. In that case it was a bad NIC, but a bad ethernet cable, port on the router, etc could cause the same problem. The tell-tale sign in that case was a continuous ping which resulted in a large number of dropped packets. This may or may not apply to you, but it's worth looking at.

First of all thanks for all of your fast responses!

@T3slider

I tried blacklisting ipv6 by adding this line "blacklist ipv6" in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but with no success. I tried with Konqueror too, but i get the same results as in firefox.

@onebuck

that was a big typo, anyway i've inserted nameserver ips in /etc/resolv.conf
I'm in Italy, so using an Italian ISP, dns addresses are these:
212.216.112.112
212.216.172.62
I've tried adding them to resolv.conf and rebooted the computer, but still the problem is there.
@damgar
Everything is working fine in Windows7 and was working fine in Ubuntu 10.04(switched from Ubuntu to Slackware).
