Slackware 12 XFCE problem
Hello all!
I'm not sure if anyone else is getting this problem or not, but I seem to be having it. The problem is with automounting of dual layer DVDs in XFCE with slackware 12.1, Slamd64 (A 64 bit version of slackware) 12.1 and now that I have just tried it (from a fresh install), Slackware 12.2 . All three exhibit the same problem. The problem is that (say) when XFCE is running, and I incert either a CD or Normal (4.7GB) DVD an icon will appear as normal on the XFCE desktop with no problems. However, if I try the same thing with a newer dual layer DVD nothing happens - no icon appears, and the DVD is not mounted (I can confirm the dual layer DVD is working, as is the hardware - I've tried other known good dual layer DVDs and installed slackware 12.x/XFCE on other systems, and I get the same problem). I get the same problem on 3 different PCs and/or with different versions of slackware, namely 12.1, Slamd64 12.1 and now Slackware 12.2 . Does anyone else have this problem at all, and does anyone know if it can be fixed? Thanks ljones |
I can confirm that I've never had this problem on 12.1. Haven't tried 12.2 yet.

Bizarre :( I wonder what causes it - I've never got it to work yet x.x

Can you mount manually using the 'mount' command?
|
And check dmesg just after you have loaded a disk.

Curiouser and curiouser. I confirm. KDE creates DL disk icons and presents the usual pop-up. Nothing on Xfce. I can still play the DL DVD by starting xine and selecting the DVD button, but no desktop icon. Desktop icons appear in Xfce for SL DVDs and CDs.

I can mount the DL-DVD with no problems manually with mount/umount. Nothing appears in demsg at all, either for normal or dual layer dvd's. (Though icons do appear for normal dvd's, none for dual layer in xfce). I get the following from lshal, though; Code:
lshal -m after incerting DL-DVD ljones |
If it works in KDE then it is an XFCE(problem?). Could also be a missing icon. Have you tried different icon themes. Possible tango?

Which different XFCE icon theme should I try? Most I've looked at don't seem complete, and just replace a few icons!

More news. Oddly, slackware 12.2 now seems to fix this problem. But slamd64 12.2 dosen't fix it! I wonder what the difference is?!

Bumping because I now have this problem with Slackware 13. When I insert a dual-layered DVD, Xfce mounts it but no icon appears.
Yes, it happens only with Xfce and dual-layered DVDs. Dual-layered DVDs get automounted properly (icons and all) with KDE. And when Xfce mounts CDs and single-layered DVDs, the expected icons appear. Although someone also suggested on the slamd64 forums that the icon theme might be to blame, I don't think this is the case. Xfce has a fallback icon for when proper icons aren't available. |
