indeed that is strange i have slack on 2 systems here, 1 a laptop, the other a p4 which i use as a server, neither are giving me issues, you prob did do this but i will ask anyway, did you check the iso's (dvd or cd's) before you burned them and are you using good quality dvds/cds and at what speed.
when i used to burn the cds i always used the lowest speed the cds were rated at (norm 4X or 8X - 4X one the master discs) - same for dvds, that way you get a good burn, if the cds you used were rated at top speed 48X or 52X and it did try to burn them at that speed that may have caused a bad burn, then again it could be something totaly different
I suspect that the problem may have been NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run I have now tried NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run and so far not had a freeze since.
i have that NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run installed on my server but have not had any freezes, mind you the server isnt up all the time so that may be a reason why i havent had any freezes time will tell i suppose
that post seems to be dealing with earlier versions of both the kernel itself and the nvidia driver, although if you say you went back a version of the nvidia driver and all is ok, you should try and get all the info you can and issue a bug ticket on the nvidia site
I am seeing this problem also. I have had freezes while running other applications, but it primarily happens when running firefox / seamonkey / mozilla. Often, they just quit, rather than freeze.
I have seen this problem with Slackware 11.0 and various versions of Zenwalk. I do not remember this being an issue with Slackware 10.0, so I wonder if it is a 2.6 kernel issue.
For the record, I have a clean install of Slackware 12 and am running the default ATI driver.
I have never had freezes with Slackware 11 and have always had a 2.6 kernel. I have had the odd crash with firefox but I assume that was a firefox specific issue.

I've had some problems with a new fresh install on known stable equipment.
I'm spending a lot of time tracing through this one!
I've not had a problem with 'X' or for that matter Firefox. Right now I'm using 'KDE' on this machine. I usually use 'XFCE' but that will be addressed later.
I'm not experiencing freezes or oops on this install. I'm going to reboot today and see what happens.
